50 Years Ago October 26, 1967
Gary Jones was pictured on the cover of Cycle News 50 years ago. He was
the 500/Open Amateur-class winner at the Perris TT Scrambles in Perris, Cali-
fornia… We covered the Nevada State Championship Hare Scrambles, billed
as Las Vegas vs. Los Angeles. Mike Patrick rode a Norton Twin to the overall
victory… Brothers Don and Derek Rickman of the Rickman/Matisse fame
came to California from their home in Great Britain to examine the riding terrain
to perhaps one day build a bike better suited for
western riding needs.
40 Years Ago October 19, 1977
The Trans-AMA Motocross Series visited Unadilla and Roger DeCoster
emerged with the win, narrowly beating out Brad Lackey who fell two laps from
the end, costing him the victory. "The D always wins in the end," said Lackey…
Gary Scott was the big winner at the AMA/Camel Pro Series TT at Ascot. How-
ever, Jay Springsteen won his second GNC title. Garth Brow nabbed his first
GNC victory at the Ascot Half Mile held the day following the TT… We showed
you the bikes of the Trans-AMA MX Series.
20 Years Ago October 15, 1997
Five champions were crowed over the weekend 20 years ago and we put them
all on the cover: Doug Chandler (AMA Superbike), Mike Faria (Speedway),
Scott Parker (GNC), Max Biaggi (250 World Road Race) and John Kocinski
(World Superbike)… We also showed you some of the hot new bikes coming
out like the Honda VFR800, Kawasaki ZX9, Yamaha YZF-R1 and Suzuki
TL1000R… Jeremy McGrath made his Yamaha debut at the Sheffield Super-
cross in England. He led until the last lap when Larry Ward passed him.
