50 Years Ago October 12, 1967
Cycle News started a monthly "Action Photo Contest" and the first winning
photo was put on the cover 50 years ago. Richard Busch, who caught Mel
Hannah catching air on his Triumph, shot the photo. Busch also pocked the
$10 prize money… We ran an ad announcing the U.S. debut of the new Suzuki
TM-250 Moto-Cross. It boasted "dual floating expansion chambers," fiberglass
fenders and weighed 230 pounds… Freddie Nix led from start to finish at the
9-Mile National in Oklahoma City.
40 Years Ago October 5, 1977
The Trans-AMA Motocross got underway at Mid-Ohio. Roger DeCoster took
the overall win but Bob Hannah, who was showing serious speed, suffered a
mechanical problem and went 1-17 on the day… Skip Aksland scored his first
AMA Camel Pro Grand National win when he passed Mike Kidd and Hank
Scott on the last lap of the San Jose Mile… Larry Roeseler was doing his
thing in the California desert when he won the Shamrocks Hare & Hound… We
showed you spy photos of the 1978 Maico 400 production bike.
20 Years Ago October 1, 1997
John Kocinski was pictured on the cover 20 years ago for winning both
legs of the FIM World Superbike round in Albacete, Spain. The wins gave
him a 52-point lead in the 1997 championship… We covered the MXoN from
Nismes, Belgium, where the U.S Team (Jeff Emig, John Dowd and Steve
Lamson) suffered "its worst defeat in the modern MXoN era" on an over-
watered track. Belgium won; USA took eighth… We interviewed 250cc MX
World Champion Stefan Everts… Matt Hines won the Keystone National
drag races in Reading, Pennsylvania.

We ran a photo on the cover of a smiling Elizabeth Taylor who just received
a new Harley-Davidson for her birthday. It was a gift from publishing tycoon
Malcolm Forbes. Taylor and Forbes then rode to Englishtown Raceway to
watch motocross races… Chris Carr won the GNC Ascot Half Mile but Bubba
Shobert clinched the 1987 championship… We covered the opening round
of the Dodge Truck Trans-Cal MX Series at Sunrise MX. Tommy Watts, Jeff
Stanton and Ty Davis were the big winners… We
interviewed speedway racer Bobby Schwartz.
