P122 50 Years Ago October 5, 1967 Triumph-mounted Gary Nixon was pictured on the cover of Cycle News 50 years ago. He had just won the 75-Mile National Championship Road Race at Carlsbad Raceway. It not only got him on the cover but also into the AMA points lead… Perris Raceway hosted the Hilltoppers M.C.'s Charlie Coughran Benefit Scrambles… J.N. Roberts added another win to his list of accomplishments, this time at the Spoke Benders Desert Do Hare Scrambles near Palmdale, California… Dick Mann was tearing it up at Tulare flat track. 40 Years Ago September 28, 1977 We featured photos from the first Motorcycle Olympiad on the cover 40 years ago; Gaylon Mosier, Kent Howerton, Mike Bell and Gary Jones were all pictured in action from Saddleback. Howerton was the big winner… The ISDE was held in Povazka Bystrica, Czechoslovakia, and the home team took the win. Team USA—Tom and Jack Penton, Dane Leimbach, Frank Gallo, Gary Younkins and Kevin LaVoie finished fourth… Jay Springsteen won the Louisville Half Mile, edging out Garth Brow at the checkers. He edged out Scott Parker and Chris Carr for the win… We covered the third annual World Veteran-cross Motocross in Gaildorf, West Germany. For the second year in a row, Roger DeCoster took the win after battling long-time nemesis Heikki Mikkola… Eddie Lawson out-dueled Randy Mamola for the win at the Portuguese Grand Prix…Terry Kizer topped the Funny Bike class at the Mr. Turbo Summer Nationals at Great Lakes Dragway. LOOKING BACK 20 Years Ago September 24, 1997 We put 500cc winner Mick Doohan and 250cc winner Ralf Waldmann on the cover from the Grand Prix of Cataluyna. Doohan became the first person ever to win 12 500cc GPs in one season… Scott Parker won the Excelsior- Henderson Half Mile in Wisconsin; it was Parker's 82nd career GNC victory, doubling that of runner-up Jay Springsteen… Pit Beirer captured his first 250cc GP MX victory at Gaildorf… Scott Summers won the combined hare scrambles/GNCC in Millfield, Ohio… Charlie Bogard won the Suzuki Cup at Cooperland MX.
