Again, like race one, the second encounter
for the big boys was a three-start affair, this
time due to torrential conditions. Start one
was dry but aborted when rain began to
appear; start two was aborted after the rain
became too much and the circuit flooded,
causing then leader Scholtz to hydroplane
and crash down the front straight; but the
third bowl of porridge was just right as
Scholtz, Gagne and Elias went at it in a
race that Herrin and Hayden both contro-
versially elected not to take part in.
Scholtz was riding the ragged edge for
the final three laps of the race, slipping and
sliding his way around the scenic Barber
venue with Gagne right on his rear tire until
the Californian slipped off on the final lap.
That left Scholtz having to defend an ev-
er-diminishing lead to now second-placed
Elias, who closed to within 1.01 seconds but
couldn't get the job done as Scholtz took a
