Action from the Sacramento Mile was featured on the cover of Cycle News 50
years ago. We were pretty excited about this one because of all the close racing
and track records being broken. Who was the big winner? George Roeder and
his Harley-Davidson. Freddie Nix was second and Dick Mann third… Greeves
rider Gary Conrad was tearing it up in the California desert with another win,
this time at the D-37 Hare Scrambles Championship.

Jay Springsteen was pictured on the cover from the Syracuse Mile 40 years
ago. He didn't get the victory, though. Instead, it went to Gary Scott who
nipped his brother, Hank. Springsteen, however, moved four points ahead of
Ted Boody in the race for the GNC Championship… We covered the World
Championship F750 round at Laguna Seca, where Skip Aksland took the win…
Mitch Payton took the C-class (100-175cc) win in a local desert race in Red
Mountain, California… Roger DeCoster celebrated his 32nd birthday with a win
at the 500cc Swiss MX Grand Prix.

Motocross des Nations winners Rick Johnson, Bob Hannah and Jeff Ward
were pictured on the cover for winning a wet one at Unadilla. Hannah rode a
125 and the U.S. was introduced to a young Frenchman named Jean-Michel
Bayle… Bubba Shobert wrapped up the 1987 GNC Championship at the
Syracuse Mile without even having to start his bike; the race was cancelled
because of rain, and he was declared the
champion… Jeff Fredette won the Rattlesnake
National Enduro in Iowa.

out… We announced that Jeremy McGrath had signed with Chaparral/
