50 Years Ago September 7, 1967
The Salinas Ramblers M.C. held an organized ride to benefit the Cerebral
Palsy charity and some of the participants on their bikes were featured on
the cover 50 years ago… The D-37-hosted Bay Mare Races in Simi Valley,
California, pitted hare scrambles racers against desert racers in a two-day fun-
filled showdown. We were there to cover all of the action… Gary Nixon, aka the
"Baltimore Bullet," was the winner of the AMA Short Track National at Santa Fe
Park in Illinois.
40 Years Ago August 31, 1977
The fifth round of the AMA/Mr. Pibb 500cc National MX Series was held in
Dallas, Georgia, at the Burnt Hickory Motocross track, and Bob Hannah
came away with the double-moto victory. The win vaulted him over Marty
Smith to take the lead in the points race. Mike Bell won the 125cc support
class… Kenny Roberts had little difficulties running away with the win at the
GNC road race round at Pocono Raceway. It was his 24th career GNC win…
We visited the Yamaha factory in Japan.

A young Valentino Rossi, who we interviewed, was pictured on the cover with
the title "The Man Who Will Be King"… Miguel Duhamel won the AMA/MBNA
Superbike round at Pikes Peak International Raceway… With still two races left
on the schedule, rookie Ricky Carmichael clinched the AMA 125cc MX title at
Washougal… John Kocinski won the FIM World Superbike round in Austria…
Mick Doohan clinched his fourth GP title at Donington Park… Scott Parker
won the Indy Mile... Nick Wey and Justin Buckelew starred at Loretta Lynn's.

We featured the all-new 1988 Honda CR250R on the cover of Cycle News
30 years ago… Steve Morehead won the Hamburg Half Mile in New York,
but the race was marred by the death of 16-year-old Junior racer Darell Davis
of Bremerton, Washington… Rick Johnson and Donny Schmit won the final
round of the AMA 500/125cc National MX Series at Spring Creek (Millville,
Minnesota). Micky Dymond wrapped up the 125cc title; Johnson had already
clinched the 500cc championship… Steve
Childress and Jeff Matiasevich were the big
winners at Loretta Lynn's.
