IN THE WIND P32 HALBERT CAPTURES STEEL SHOE WIN R ound two of the Steel Shoe National Series came to the Isabella County Fairgrounds in Mount Pleasant, Michigan, August 19. The race was desig- nated as the Bart Markel Memo- rial and the large crowd on hand was treated to some real "Old School" dirt track racing. The premier class of the series is the Pro Super Twins and the 20-lap main event showed why. On a track he considers his hometown track, Henry Wiles took command of the race when he wrestled the lead from Ryan Wells in the first turn. Wiles (Willy Built/Kawasaki) was pulling away, but Sammy Halbert (Mike Stauffer Racing/ Harley-Davidson) was working his way through traffic and just as the halfway flags came out, Hal- bert caught Wiles. At the same time a puff of smoke came from Halbert's bike and it looked like the pending battle might be over before it got started. Instead, it was game on. Wiles and Halbert exchanged the lead repeatedly and the last ten laps of the race were nothing short of outstanding. With two laps to go, Halbert gained just a little advantage and won by less than a second. Steven Vanderkurr was a distant third on his Kawasaki. Davis Fisher (Kawasaki) and Parker Norris (Kawasaki) round- ed out the top five. The Framer 450-505cc class was dominated by Chad Cose on his Tom Engelhart Racing Honda. Kyle Johnson was second almost six seconds back. Davis Fisher, Halbert (Yamaha) and Wells (Honda) filled out the top five. The largest class of the day was the Pro 450cc DTX class. After a short scuffle with Kur- tis Lee (Honda), Kyle Johnson extended his lead to almost four seconds. However, Lee was the run down by Jeremy Orr (Honda), but was able to hold on to second by nine hundredths of a second. Jayson Bloss (Kawa- saki) captured fourth and Kaley Johnson, Kyle's sister, brought her Honda home in fifth. Dave Hoenig 1. Sammy Halbert (H-D) 2. Henry Wiles (Kaw) 3. Steven Vanderkurr (Kaw) 4.
