50 Years Ago August 31, 1967
Flat tracker Jim Nicholson was pictured on the cover of Cycle News 50 years
ago; that's what happens when you win the expert main event for the first time
at Ascot Park. His closest rivals were Shorty Seabourne and Dan Haaby.
Nicholson couldn't quite make it a perfect night, as he finished third in the Expert
Trophy Dash. Sammy Tanner was the winner with Seabourne again taking
second… J.N. Roberts won the Deadman's Point desert race in California.
40 Years Ago August 24, 1977
It was 40 years ago that Yamaha Broc Glover won his first AMA 125cc National
MX Championship and was pictured on the cover of Cycle News; he wrapped
it up with a 1-1 in San Antonio but had a little help from his Yamaha teammate
Bob Hannah, who reluctantly obeyed team orders and "Let Broc Bye" to take
the second-moto win. As a result, Glover and Danny LaPorte tied on points
but Broc had more motos wins on the year than LaPorte, breaking the tie for
the championship… Steve Eklund won the Santa Fe Mile.
20 Years Ago August 20, 1997
Scott Parker dominated the cover 20 years ago for winning Moline Half Mile,
and Rich King got a piece of the cover for winning the Rapid City Half Mile a
few days earlier… Californian flat tracker Andy Tresser passed away after being
taken off life support a day after crashing while practicing for the Rapid City Half
Mile… Billy Payne stole the headlines at the NMA Ponca City GNC… KTM
debuted its new PDS link-less suspension system on its 1998 line of dirt bikes.

30 Years Ago August 26, 1987
Gorges Jobe was pictured on the cover 30 years ago to accompany our
interview with the 1987 FIM 500cc MX World Champion… The FIM 125cc MX
World Championship came to Steel City Raceway in Delmont, Pennsylvania,
where Team Suzuki's Erik Kehoe came away with the win. The top European
was Cagiva's Davey Strijbos in third… Bubba Shobert won the Peoria TT,
setting a new time record formerly held by
Ricky Graham… Buddy Antunez and Mike
Kiedrowski were the big winners at Ponca City
GNC in Oklahoma.
