We featured some bumping and grinding from the Ventura (California) Scrambles
on the cover. BSA-mounted Clutch Cargo feels the front tire of Johnny Isaacs'
bike rubbing against the back of his leg en route to victory in the 500cc Expert
class… We reported that Nevada County was trying to pass a helmet law
of its own, and we asked the question: Does anyone have the right to put a
motorcycle rider in jail for failing to protect himself?... Skip Van Leeuwen was
at it again—winning races at Ascot Park.
40 Years Ago August 17, 1977
Marty Smith exploded off the front page of Cycle News 40 years ago.
We put him there for winning the AMA 500cc National Motocross round at
Unadilla… We also had coverage of the 500cc National round that was held
a week later at Charlotte's Metrolina Speedway Park. Bob Hannah won it…
Warren Reid finished second at the 125c MX GP in Canada… We featured
an interview with Roger DeCoster who was on the brink of losing the 500cc
World MX title to Heikki Mikkola.
20 Years Ago August 13, 1997
Kawasaki's Jeff Emig and Ricky Carmichael were the big winners at Spring
Creek. Emig won both 250cc MX motos, and Carmichael went 1-3 to win
the 125cc class… Joe Kopp captured his first AMA Grand National victory
by running away from defending champ Scott Parker at the Peoria TT…
John Kocinski won the World Superbike round at Brands Hatch… We had
full coverage of the Suzuka 8-Hour, won by Honda's Shinichi Ito and Tohru
Ukawa; John Kocinski and Alex Barros were second.

Hillclimbing got front-page billing 30 years ago. Wade Williams was pictured
after winning the Jefferson National Invitational Hillclimb in Pennsylvania…
Rick Johnson clinched the 1987 AMA 500cc MX National Championship at
the Kenworthy's GP Club MX Track in Troy, Ohio; Guy Cooper won both 125cc
motos… AMA Superbike visited Memphis International Speedway for the first
time and Kevin Schwantz was the facility's first
winner; John Kocinski clinched the AMA 250cc
Grand Prix Championship… Team USA won the
World Team Speedway at Ascot.
