STORY AND PHOTOGRAPHY BY DAVE HOENIG
A
merican Flat Track racing kicked
off the 77th annual Sturgis Bike
Week with a TT race built inside the
famous Buffalo Chip campgrounds. The
unique half-mile course snaked through
the amphitheater area, normally the home
of the Largest Music Festival in Motorcy-
cling.
All day long it appeared that Henry
Wiles (Willy Built/Mad Dog Racing/Ka-
wasaki) would be adding to his all-time TT
win list, but he could not survive the three
red flags, the last of which he caused.
Wiles led the 18 rider, 25-lap National
into turn one, a right-hand turn leading
to a sweeping left turn. Briar Bauman,
on the Zanotti Racing/Rod Lake Racing-
backed Kawasaki) settled into second
and was able to keep Wiles within reach,
but could never really challenge.
Briar Bauman (14)
survived a wild
night in South
Dakota to win the
Sturgis TT.
