We featured some bumping and grinding from the Ventura (California) Scram-
bles on the cover. BSA-mounted Clutch Cargo feels the front tire of Johnny
Isaacs' bike rubbing against the back of his leg en route to victory in the 500cc
Expert class… We reported that Nevada County was trying to pass a helmet
law of its own, and we asked the question: Does anyone have the right to put a
motorcycle rider in jail for failing to protect himself?... Skip Van Leeuwen was
at it again, winning races at Ascot Park.
40 Years Ago August 10, 1977
Cycle News tested the new Suzuki RM250C motocrosser, which was featured
in action with Mike Bell at the controls on the cover 40 years ago… Mike Bast
was also pictured on the cover after winning a transfer position at the European
Speedway Finals… Jay Springsteen scored a big win at the Du Quoin Mile;
Garth Brow was second… We had an interview with the "Flying Dentist" Gerrit
Wolsink… We also chatted with Colorado motocrosser Arlo Englund.

It was a "hot, hot, hot" one at Kenworthy's for the 125/250cc National MX in
Troy, Ohio. Damon Huffman, pictured on the cover, won the 125cc class and
Jeff Emig the 250s… Rich King came away the winner at the Eldora Half Mile
and pocketed the $10,000 winner-takes-all purse… We covered Tray Batey's
win in the Formula USA Series round at Portland International Raceway…
Alan Cathcart tested Australia's John Keogh-designed Vee Two Squalo street
bike… We showed you the 1998 line of Harley-Davidsons.

Cagiva unleashed its latest motocrossers at Glen Helen Raceway and we got
a chance to spin a few laps on the 1988 WMX125 and WMX250; pictured
on the cover in action was the WMX125... We were on-hand to cover Kevin
Schwantz's victory at the Mid-Ohio Superbike National in Ohio… Kevin Brown
edged out Tony Hendon to win the Plymouth National Hare Scrambles in In-
diana… U.S. Senator John C. Danforth intro-
duced a bill that would "limit the power and speed
of superbikes sold for street use in this country."
