CN III VOICES W H A T Y O U A R E S A Y I N G "May the sting of the supercross season become a distant memory." Washougal Motocross What is up with Martin Davalos? The boy can ride a 450! Has he been hiding this secret all along? It sounds like Husky dictated that he ride 250s, and Martin wanted to move up. And Marvin Musquin was a sight to behold, his ride looked so smooth and effortless. Too bad Roczen isn't in the mix. Good job Joey [Savatgy] - may the sting of the super- cross season become a distant memory. Howard Halterman Marvin Musquin is riding better than he ever has. More aggres- sive. Eli Tomac is smart to not take chances. He's stretching out the points lead on Blake Baggett, who is the only guy within striking distance points- wise. I'm cheering for Tomac to take the championship. With his speed he should've won at least one by now. Mistakes have cost him big time in the past. Terry Heath Looks like Tomac has clicked his bike into Dungey gear. Andy Kemps EMPIRE OF DIRT I would expand upon Steve Cox's observation in his column "MX Teaches Everything" and say that motocross also builds a foundation for a non-motor- ized racer's success (think: Johnny O'Mara). Here in Portland, several hundred of us gather every Monday in the summer to race mountain bikes on our local motocross track. I can attest that the instincts I developed racing motocross in the 1980s help me as a mountain bike racer today. I slither around my competitors using intuitive line selection and out-braking them into corners. Sensing our respective strong and weak spots on the track, I can plan accordingly on where and how to execute a block-pass, or protect against being passed. I'm no Johnny O'Mara, and I don't win moun- tain bike races. But I'm competitive against far stronger cyclists, and I owe that to my decades- ago experience racing motocross. Jon Coney Jeremy McGrath and Brian Deegan are two other ex- amples. They are both at the top level of Lucas Oil Off-Road Racing series. Also, I think that EnduroX, off-road and trials riders have many of the same skills/abilities as MXers. (Although most of them have at least ridden on an MX track.) Lee Cook MX skills have even helped me in kayak (surfski) racing! John Johnson Bill Werner: AMA Legend Bill Werner also turned the Ka- wasaki 650 engine into a com- petitive powerplant. It ended years of Harley domination, rekindled interest in flat track racing and pulled Indian into the sport. Major networks now cover the sport and ratings are rising. This is what he should be remembered for. James Edward Zeiser Archives: Harley- Davidson's Café Racer I've owned several and had the same one since 1987. I like to look at it but am not big on riding it. They are right there with the shovelhead in the high- maintenance department. In the XR1200, the Motor Compa- ny retained one feature of the XLCR, it's portly weight, mak- ing it not very well-balanced. Gregg Davis Letters to the editor can be sent to voices@cyclenews.com.
