A
fter a three-week hiatus, the
American Flat Track Champi-
onship resumed at the Napa
County Fairgrounds' Calistoga Speed-
way. Situated in the Northern Califor-
nia wine country, Calistoga is mainly
known for it's spas and wineries, but
the speedway's banked half-mile has
hosted sprint car racing for many years
and was hosting grand national motor-
cycle races for the fourth time.
Excessive heat and a steady wind
no doubt played a big part in the
racetrack developing a narrow groove
around the bottom. In past years, once
the sun went down, the racing surface
grew, but that was not the case this
time. Any ventures off the "groove"
were punished severely.
