50 Years Ago August 10, 1967
We got artsy when it came to the cover of Cycle News 50 years ago. We had
fun with Steve McLaughlin inside our studio and came up with this unique look
at road racing… Blackie Bruce was the big winner in the Trophy Dash at the
Ascot Half Mile… We had full coverage of local AMA Sportsman road racing at
Carlsbad Raceway… Evel Knievel came up one car short when attempting to
jump 16 of them at Graham Speedway in Washington. He suffered broken ribs,
a broken finger and a concussion.
40 Years Ago August 3, 1977
Brad Lackey was featured on the cover 40 years looking a little different than
we usually see him—in his riding gear—for our interview with the GP contender...
At the 500cc National MX in St. Peters, Missouri, Honda's Marty Smith and
Tommy Croft went 1-2… Gary Scott grabbed some of the headlines for win-
ning the Ascot TT—for the fourth time… We featured a season update on the
FIM 250cc MX Grand Prix Championship, which was being headed by two Rus-
sians—Gennady Moisseev and Vladimir Kavinov.
20 Years Ago July 30, 1997
We featured photos of all of the big winners over a busy weekend of racing.
We had Miguel Duhamel for winning the AMA Superbike at Mid-Ohio, Jeff
Emig for winning the AMA 250cc National Motocross at Unadilla, Will Davis
for winning the Oklahoma City Half Mile, and Mick Doohan for winning the
German Grand Prix… We attended the Hollister 50th Anniversary Motor-
cycle Rally, which went much smoother than the first one 50 years earlier…
Shane Watts won the Trask Mountain 2-Day Qualifier.

Randy Mamola was pictured on the cover 30 years ago for winning the French
GP at Le Mans… Also on the cover was a photo of a 1950 Norton Daytona
Manx 500 that test rider Alan Cathcart got to revisit… Bubba Shobert won
the DuQuoin Mile… We had sneak peaks of the preproduction 1988 Suzuki
RM250 and Kawasaki KX250… Cycle News covered the first U.S. Senate
hearings on S7, the bill that threatened to close
more than 8 million acres of public (riding) lands
in California.
