P114 50 Years Ago August 3, 1967 Skip Van Leeuwen claimed his first national victory at the Ascot TT. Race leader Jack Simmons, also seeking that first national win, crashed on the last lap. Dusty Coppage was pictured on the cover leading Simmons (88) and Van Leeuwen (59) early in the race… We reported that the California "danger bill," which would have put more safety regulations on motorcyclists, had been defeated. Only Cycle News and the Hells Angels had testified against the bill, which would have also forced motorcyclists to wear helmets and require an automotive license. 40 Years Ago July 27, 1977 Kenny Roberts was featured on the cover 40 years ago to accompany our hangin' out story with the "King." We wanted to dig deeper into the non-racing side of his life… Speaking of Roberts, we covered his last-to-first-place victory at Sears Point… Texas' own Steve Stackable won the 500c National Moto- cross at Lake Whitney… The 10th round of the 125cc World Championship MX Series was held at Mid-Ohio. Gaston Rahier went 3-1 for the overall win. The top American on the day was Pat Richter in third. 20 Years Ago July 23, 1997 John Kocinski was pictured on the cover for winning the U.S. World Super- bike round at Laguna Seca; Aaron Yates won the 600cc Supersport… Scott Parker recorded his 78th career AMA Grand National win and 44th career mile victory at Du Quoin… For the second year in a row, Davey Durelle captured the Open Pro-class win at the Pikes Peak Hillclimb… We featured an interview with GP road racer Daryl Beattie… Former 250 and 500cc National MX Champion Kent Howerton was featured in a "Time Remembered" piece.
