VOL. 54 ISSUE 29 JULY 25, 2017 P53 D ucati unveiled what will be the final Panigale superbike. Dubbed the 1299 R Fi- nal Edition in the Italian Tri Color scheme, the machine will signal an end to Ducati's V-twin superbike with Ducati CEO Claudio Domenicalli also releasing details of the newly anticipated V4. The new Final Edition en- gine has been developed off the recently released Super- leggera, with a claimed 209 horsepower and 104 lb-ft of torque on tap from the Su- perquadro motor. The motor includes a lighter crankshaft, larger intake and exhaust valves, reworked cylinder heads, cams with higher lift, and a full titanium Akrapovic exhaust with WorldSBK-style underseat mufflers. The Final Edition doesn't come with Ohlins electronic suspension, instead it comes with a mechanical NIX30 fork and TTX36 shock, an adjust- able Ohlins steering damper and forged alloy wheels. On the electronics side, the Final Edition gets Ducati's standard three riding modes (Race, Sport and Wet), Ducati Wheelie Control Engine Brak- ing Control, Ducati Quick Shift for clutchless up and down gearshifts, a Bosch Inertial Measurement Unit with Cor- nering ABS and the Ducati Traction Control Evo system, and the ECU now calibrates the speedo automatically to different tire sizes and final drive ratios. The delectable Ducati 1299 R Panigale Final Edition will set you back a tasty $40,000, but when you consider that many of the parts belong to the Superleggera—and that beauty costs twice the price—the Final Edition does make for a very tasty proposition.
