"I almost never have a near miss because I am
always expecting one."
Nicky Hayden
A couple of writers wanted to
honor Nicky Hayden in last
week's Voices. One suggested
Mazda Raceway be named
after Nicky in the same man-
ner that Marco Simoncelli was
honored by Misano. Great
idea, but I think that is unlikely
to happen. Wayne Rainey and
Mario Andretti have corners
named for them.
If it were up to me, I'd name
the bridge on the main straight
leading up to turn one after
him.
Nicky's back-to-back wins at
Laguna were incredible. See-
ing the iconic pairing of Nicky
and the Honda 990 RC211V at
speed under the bridge and
over turn one was amazing to
watch. Honoring him at this
demanding part of the circuit
seems fitting to me.
God Speed Nicky!

Flat Track And NBCN
Nice to watch flat track racing
on NBCN. Nice work Jason,
Heather and Larry on the cov-
erage—finally some announc-
ers with some enthusiasm and
good knowledge for the sport.
And we count on NBCN to be
consistent on the scheduling
on one network. Take note FS
and MAV.

You were untouchable in bike
setup and riding style. But,
come on, Sammy, I so want
you to get a win for Yamaha.

S'not My Fault
Rennie, more riders need to al-
low themselves to be schooled
by this good insight (Lowside).
I have ridden my whole life, but
just in the last year, I've been
seeing what you describe.
Thanks for putting it into words
that I could not seem to find.
Maybe it is like the podium of
survival—only a third have all
the parts in place to do it right
and get on the box! You are not
cool just because you ride. And
more and more idiots are mak-
ing my passion look more like a
mission—to be stupid.

Two things: first, Rennie versus
Pikes Peak, good on ya Ren-
nie! Well done!
But more importantly,
thank you for the well-
written piece on "per-
sonal responsibility!" As
a rider for 50-plus years,
I have seen them all,
and it is rarely anyone's
fault except for the "nut
behind the wheel," or in
our case—handlebars!
Someone had to say it,
so thanks Rennie!

I've read many stories about
motorcyclists' accounts of
close calls, or having "sur-
vived" an encounter with an
aggressive car driver (I believe
the AMA magazine even had
a column on the subject). I
always wondered how many of
these stories omitted the part
about them giving the car driver
the finger or a shaking fist, or
making an unnecessarily close
pass a mile or so earlier.

Well said, Rennie! I have guys
tell me all the time how many
near misses they have with
cars and it makes me wonder
about their skills. I almost never
have a near miss because I am
always expecting one.

Rennie Scaysbrook's sarcasm
was an enjoyable read.
