IN THE WIND P36 AMADOR TAKES ON CNPS A ccording to the California Native Plant Society (CNPS), "Environmental damage from OHV activity is outpacing California's ability to repair it." That was the title of a recent political campaign article that stood behind SB249, a bill that stands to essentially deconstruct the California OHV program. This is a significant issue to California off-roaders, especially to land-use advocate Don Amador, who has dedicated much of his career to working with lawmakers, and even environmental groups, to develop effective and responsible OHV programs. Amador describes SB249 as "crafted in the dark of night by the CNPS and a small group of extreme environmental groups over the course of the last two years without OHV involvement." Under the guise of program "reform," SB249 is being heavily (and shamelessly) spun by the CNPS, who recently published the aforementioned article. See it here. Fortunately Amador is up to speed on the scheming actions of the bill-crafters and propa- ganda peddlers, and promptly responded to the campaign article with an op-ed of his own. We invite you to read Amador's well-crafted re- sponse to the CNPS article, which sheds light on the many skewed "facts" presented by the CNPS. He also points out the blatant errors and lack of accountability of SB249, and highlights the thinly veiled agenda behind the legislation to "create a target rich environment for future litigation of the OHVMR Division… with unwarranted regulations." See Don Amador's op-ed here. CN DUCATI MULTISTRADA SET TO GROW TO 1260 T he Ducati Multistrada 1200 looks like it will get its first capacity increase since being re- leased in 2010, with CARB docu- ments revealed by motorcycle. com showing the company has put forward a 1262cc version of its highly acclaimed all-roads tourer. The 1262 Testastretta motor cur- rently resides in the XDiavel power cruiser, itself released in early 2016, which creates a claimed 156 hp at 9500 rpm and 95 lb-ft of torque at 5000 rpm at the crank- shaft. Currently, the Multistrada 1200 produces 158 hp at 9500 rpm and 100.3 lb-ft of torque at 7500 rpm, and just shoehorning the 1260 motor into a Multistrada chassis would actually result in less power than currently avail- able. It's therefore likely the new Multistrada will have various intake changes, including a reworked airbox. The scenario is further backed up by the fact in the CARB document, the new Multistrada 1200 produces nearly twice the level of hydrocarbons, as well as triple the carbon monoxide levels of the XDiavel. More air going in should mean more power going out, and it's highly unlikely Ducati would give the Multistrada a ca- pacity increase that would result in less overall horsepower and torque than what's available now. Ducati put forth three versions of the Multistrada 1260 to the Cali- fornia air police—the 1260, 1260S and 1260 Pikes Peak—although no mention in the documents was made to the 1200 Enduro, meaning it will likely stay the same capacity it is now (1198cc) for the 2018 model year. CN The Multi looks like it'll get bigger for next year, putting it a step ahead of BMW's R 1200 GS but behind the KTM 1290 Super Adventure R in terms of capacity.
