50 Years Ago July 27, 1967
Racing action from the Portland GNC Championship was featured on the cover
of Cycle News 50 years ago. Roger Reiman was pictured leading Gary Nixon
and Cal Rayborn in a heat race. Reiman won the heat race but Nixon went on
to win main… In 115-degree temperatures, the Calico 50 was held at El Mirage
Dry Lake in California; when the organizers felt that race positions weren't going
to change anymore, the race was called after 43 miles and James Harmon, on
a 100cc Yamaha, was named the winner.
40 Years Ago July 20, 1977
Jimmy Weinert got top billing on the cover 40 years ago for winning the sixth
running of the Superbowl of Motocross at the Los Angeles Memorial Coli-
seum… Also pictured on the cover was Reg Pridmore; we attended one of his
road racing schools at Riverside International Raceway… Bob Hannah won
the 125cc National MX at the Agency MX track in Missouri… Mick Grant gave
Kawasaki its first lightweight GP win in the Dutch TT at Assen... We showed you
some of the works bikes of the 125cc National MX scene.
20 Years Ago July 16, 1997
After winning for the first time on home soil at Southwick, John Dowd, who
was pictured on the cover of Cycle News 20 years ago, did it again a week
later at the 250cc National MX at RedBud; Kevin Windham made it a Yama-
ha day by winning the 125cc class… Kevin Atherton topped the I-96 National
Half Mile in his home state of Michigan… Mick Doohan won the Imola Grand
Prix… Steve Lamson was the master of the Mammoth Mountain Motocross…
Mike Lafferty won the Paul Bunyan National Enduro in Minnesota.

30 Years Ago July 22, 1987
We visited Kenny Roberts at his Northern California home, and to accompany
our hanging with the "King" story, we ran a photo of him on the cover having fun
on his property, sliding around on his Yamaha V-Max… Steve Morehead won
the Hagerstown Half Mile… Rick Johnson and Erik Kehoe were the big win-
ners at Lake Sugartree MX Park in Virginia. Johnson topped the 500cc class
and Kehoe the 125cc class… Bubba Shobert
was the surprise winner at the AMA Superbike
round at Laguna Seca; Jimmy Filice was sec-
ond.
