50 Years Ago July 20, 1967
We pictured a little bit of everything on the cover of Cycle News 50 years ago,
most of them from the Castle Rock TT National, where Mert Lawwill took the
win over Dave Palmer and Chris Draayer. Jimmy Odom won the Amateur
final… J.N. Roberts continued his dominance in the California desert, winning
the AMA/D-37 European Scrambles Championship over runner-up Larry
Bergquist, and Bob Ferro… An anti-helmet law hearing in Sacramento was
attended by the Hells Angels M.C.
40 Years Ago July 13, 1977
Heikki Mikkola was pictured on the cover after winning the 500cc MX GP
in Canada, bolstering his lead in the championship. The Flying Finn held a
commanding lead and was a sure bet to end Roger DeCoster's 500cc title
reign. We also had a profile of the soon-to-be world champ… We reported that
Mike Bell had signed a contract with Yamaha… Broc Glover won the 125cc
National MX at Rio Bravo in Texas… Mike Kidd won the San Jose Mile for his
second straight win in the championship.

The WorldSBK Championship was coming to Laguna Seca and we previewed
the big weekend; we interviewed Colin Edwards and Carl Fogarty, and
took a close-up look at the Honda RC45 Superbike… We covered Miguel
Duhamel's AMA Superbike win at Brainerd… Scott Parker chalked up his
77th career victory at the Lima Half Mile… Mick Doohan won the Dutch TT
Grand Prix… Rodney Smith edged out Scott Summers for the win at the
Starvation Point GNCC in West Virginia… Donnie Book and teammate Dave
Ondas won the Silver State 300.

Kevin Schwantz was featured on the cover 30 years ago to accompany our
interview with the rising star from Texas… The Buell R 1000 was also pictured
on the cover and tested by CN contributor Alan Cathcart… Honda teammates
continued to rule the National MX scene with Rick Johnson and Micky
Dymond winning the 500/125cc classes at RedBud… Eddie Lawson took the
win at the Dutch Grand Prix… Ronnie Jones won the Middletown Half Mile…
Larry Roeseler won the Saxon Two-Day ISDE
Qualifier in Bellingham, Washington.
