P124 50 Years Ago July 13, 1967 Our cover story was our report from the Tulare 5-Mile Championship, and pictured on the front page was Bart Markel with a caption that read: "He can beat the pants off anybody, anywhere. Need we say more?" Needless to say, Markel won it all that day… Norton pilot Dave Palmer became just the second man of the sea- son to beat Skip Van Leeuwen at the Ascot TT… Drag racing was going strong at California's Irwindale Raceway where the Murray & Cook Triumph came out on top with a 9.89 sec./161.57 mph run. 40 Years Ago July 6, 1977 We featured a photo from the Mammoth Mountain Motocross and the Trials National from Washington. Dennis Brand and Aaron Bassett were some of the hot riders at Mammoth, and Marland Whaley was the top trialer in Washington… We covered the Santa Fe TT in Hinsdale, Illinois where Jay Springsteen came away with the win… Bob Hannah won the 125cc National MX in Midland, Michigan, putting him in second place in the championship behind Danny LaPorte… Heikki Mikkola extended his 500cc points lead over Roger DeCoster in Italy. 20 Years Ago July 2, 1997 We ran a photo of the first production Yamaha YZ400F four-stroke on the cover with the words "4-Stroke 4 Sale"… Home hero John Dowd took the over- all win at the AMA 250cc National Motocross at Southwick; Ricky Carmichael won the 125cc class… John Kocinski won the World Superbike Championship round at Monza… Will Davis was the big winner at the Sedalia Half Mile… We interviewed world champ Mick Doohan… Aussie Shane Watts won the Trask 2-Day Qualifier… We featured a Time Remembered piece on Jeff Smith.
