County Supervisor calls dirt riders "renegades" LOS ANGELES, CA, MAR. 25 Efforts to fund off-road vehicle recreation areas within Los Angeles County have met with roadblocks thrown up by mem- ber s of th e county's boa rd o f supervi- sors. In a March 6 letter to th e Ca li - fornia State Department of Parks and Rec reation Off-Highwa y Motor Vehicle Recrea ti on co mmis sio n (OHMVR), Fifth District Supervisor Mich ael D.Antonovich opposed pro- posed establishment of an ORV park in Mill Ca nyon nea r Acton, Ca li for - ni a, characteri zing off-road ride rs as ".. . renegademotorcycle gangs . . ." prone to " , . . wanton disregard of personal and prope rty righ ts . . . in - flicted upon th eir commun ity. " In a J anuary 31 letter to OHMVR Commissione r Ed Waldheim , First Distri ct Supervisor Peter F. Sch aba- rum revea led th at three ORV area projects were proposed in hi s distr ict alone, and th at all had been " . . . with- drawn because of community oppo- sition... · . But theact ions of o ne o f Antono- vich's aides a t a recent public meet- ing suggest th at gatheri ng of public comment on p ro posed ORV p roj ects is one-sided and aimed to discred it th e legitimat e interest s of ORV en- thusiasts. The aide in question a ttended a meeting called by th e Acton Home- owners's Association regarding th e proposed Mill Canyon Off-Road Ve- hicle area. At the meet ing, homeown- ers opposing esta blishment of th e a rea cla imed that th e ORVS would ca use noi se and dust poll ution even though th e closest home is located over five miles from the pro posed area . And afte r hea rin g th ose in cred- ibl e claims, Aruonovich's aide asked, "How many peop le here are against this proj ect?" T he response, predict- ably, was entirely negative, and th e aide reported to Antonovich that " the commun ity" opposed th e project. In a lett er to the U.S. Forest Ser- vice , Anto novich sa id th at the home- owners' claims of potential noise and dust pollution -.: at a distance of ove r five mi les - were legi tima te.
