time was th e key to his win as he turned an 8.474/ 155.76 to Nyberg's 8.498/ 153.11. Jim Dodi ch , aboard Chip Solley's new pro stock Suzuki, was supposed to meet Dave Sawyer in his first ro und but Sawyer co uld n ' t fix a broken transmission which brought up an alternate,Birch.Dodich smoked him 8.632/152.49 to 9.395/97.15. Tire sp in was something Randy Mason was using a ll his drag racing savvy to comba t all weekend. T his round was no exception. Randy's reaction time was a .610 to Ni ck Par- tin 's .539. This mad e Randy get in it hard and th e tire smoked. Lu cky Ior- him, the Suzuki of Partin only ro lled to a 9.952/146.80 so he caught him a~d his 8.596/ 157.61was good for th e WIII. The seco nd round opened with Mafaro and Schultz. Because of hi s ETs Schultz knew Mafaro would try to cut a light on him.T o keep th e tire from breaking loose, Dave came out a li tt le soft figuring th e li tt le bit he lost a t th e light he could mak e up. That's when his han dl in g problems magn i- fied themselves. He got all over the track sti ll ma naging an 8.473/ 158.73 to Malaro's 8.547/155.33 but couldn't make up the time lost at th e ligh t and went to th e trailer. When Schultz gets his chassis dialed in as well as the motor is, he' ll be a definite force to be reckoned with. Charlie Gressman met Keyte next. Gressman 's Suzuki was awav fir st leaving Mike to examine hi s tai llight in first gear. Then Keyte's Suzuki came on stro ng in third and caught Gressman. When they gor ro th e traps nei ther was sure who had won. But when the slips came up, Keyte's8.550/ 156.73 was good enough to put Gressman on the trai ler with his 8.603/1 52.74. There's nothing worse th an red- lighting and finding out your oppo- nent had a bad pass. But that was the case when th e two Suzuki-sponsored men , Vance and Carpenter met. Car- peru er knew Vance had been runnin g a full .10 faster so he wanted to get out fas t. Well, he did, to a red light. Meanwhile, Van ce came out through some oi l or wat er and spun hi s wheel for a bout eight feet. T erry turned his slowest pa ss of th e meet - 8.657/ 159.17 to Carpenter's 8.585/ 156.95. Next up found Dodich with a broken airli ne on hi s air sh ifter and Mason turning his fastest pass thus far , an 8.434/ 159.46. The semis found Mafaro out-gun- ning Keyte afte r a lmos t ide ntica l reaction times.Mafaro's .489 to Keyte's .485. The 8.45 9/ 156.30 to Keyte's 8.595/1 55.89 tell the ta le, RandyMason knew he would have to put i t all together th is round for T erry Vance. He changed a rear sprocket to sq ueeze a little more mph out of th e Kawasaki. The lights came down and Vance was out fir st bu t th e bike wouldn't shi ft. He had to back out of it, then shift. By then Mason was mak in g th e pass of his life. The sproc ket didn 't give him anymore mph bu t the great compe tition did giv e him an 8.398/1 58.95 to Vance's 8.5011158.73. As Mason and Mafaro lin ed up for the fin al Randy knew Mafaro would come out hard. Mason knew if he came out hard hi s tire would go up in smoke. As theweekend had progressed he had go tten a firm hold on th e problem and th e bike was leaving well and not spi nning, so he figured if he came out easy, he was getting such good mph he could catc h Mafaro on th e top end. Mafaro's Suzuki was out first, Randy came out easy and th e bike bogged for jus t a spli t second and took ofL It was a ll it took.Mafaro went in th e book 8.456/155.87 to 8.470/1 58.61. • - BE READ . our time of year.
