Moen, Ever take top honors in CRRCopener By Scott Schaefer COLLEGESTATION,TX,MAR.24 Wayne Ever and Meri l Moen took tOPhonors at the Central Road Racing Club (CRRC) sea- son opener at Texas World Speedway with Ever tak ing four nov- ice class firsts and Moen winning both Formula One Expert and A Produc- tion. Ever took his novice trophies by consistently running in th e top five overall in themixed expen and nov ice races. Moen also took second in A Superbike even after leading his class severa l times. Weather was sunny and mild for th e ra ces, ah hough th e track was in the same poor condition as last year. A new computerized gridding and scoring system was used and cut down drastically on delays. The combined Formula II class was first race of th e day, and it was on e of th e best. Jessie Daniel, on th e onlyTZ250 lefl runningafter practice, worked thrugh a tough pack of Inter- ceptors to get within striking di stance of leader Ronnie Lunsford. For sev- eral la ps, Daniel drafted behind Lunsford's Honda, but couldn' t get around, as the two stretched out a lead over the rest of the field . Then, just two laps from the finish , Daniel's bike seized right a t the start/finish line, giving Lunsford an easy win. In th e D Superbike class Michael Snoddy pulled out an early lead on his RZ350 with Roy Thoma close behind. Snoddy retired on the third lap with engine problems, then short- Iyafter that, Thoma seized also. Jamie James inherited the lead and was able 10 keep it. The A Superbike class race prom- 3_2 ised to be tight; class champion Ollis Lance, was favored to win, but sev- era l top contenders were th ere wi th new and improved mach in es. Some drama was added to th e stan when SCOll Ward 's Honda died on th e se- cond row and he rai sed hi s hand for assistance; the sta rter didn't see him and flagged off th e expert wave any- way. There was a restart, but poor flagging almost sent Lance crashing into slower riders when thev were ins tructed 10 bypass pan of th'(, track to regrid. J eff Berglund's new Suzuki Katana was al so a casua lly of the stan when he fou led a plug on th e l ine. Once th e race got underway, it was business as usual for Lance, then Moen suddenly passed him on his stock Ninja. La nce regained th e lead two laps la ter, but had 10 keep look- ing over his shoulder 10 stay ahea d of the charging Moen. II appeared th e Formula One class ~ i: race, but when Lance lost hi s ignition on th e first lap, the lead was up for grabs. Moen took the lead and pro- ceeded 10 really stretch it OUI. Winner of th e Vet class was Bob Sward (KT M) who has won this race twice in years previous. He showed th e young guys he' s still has what it takes by motor- ing to l l th overall. In the final sprint to the finish li ne, T urk was in fourth as he came 10 the Dev- il's Drop aft er Surrau, Pederson and Heal ey had already taken th e check- ered flag.Then Ramageshoe-horned his front tire 10 th e inside of Turk in th e last tum. Turk swerved left on Ramage, and the two riders went down only 10 feet from th e finish. Turk got up and fired first to get fourth place. Ramage finished fifth. In moto two , Pederson held down the lead with Surratt second. Even though Surratt stayed relatively close all the way, hewas never able 10 over- take Pederson and th e overall went to the Canadian. Both riders were tied on money and th e purse was paid by rnoto, Healey and Canadian Darren Sharuga (Yam) finished third and fourth, respectively. and Ramage was fifth . In th e 125cc Pro class, Pederson was in control most of the day as he closed in on firs t moto leaders Mike Beier (Kaw) and Bader Manneh (Kaw) who was second. Manneh soon took the lead, followed by Beier, Pederson, Mike Brown (Kaw) and Doug Du- bach (Kaw). It remained that way until lap four when Pederson passed Beier only 10 get re-passed by Beier on the next lap. Manneh began to fade 'wi th mechanical problems on lap six, and Beier regained the lead with Pederson second, Brown third, Dub- ach fourth and Larry Brooks (Han) now in fifth. It stayed that way until th e next-to-last lap when Pederson shot past Beier for th e win and Dub- ach passed Brown for third. Hea ley (Suz) grabbed the lead in the second faceoff. Manneh was again near th e lead, but faded away by the midway mark. Meanwhile, Brooks had third. Dubach fourth and Peder- son was barely holding back Beier in th eir race for fifth and the overall. Several laps lat er, Pederson made his move and was in second place. leaving Beier back in fourth; as long as Pederson held the advantage over Beier. the overall was his . But Beier got around Brooks and moved into third near the end of the mota.When the white flag carne out, it was Healey, Pederson, Beier. Brooks and Brown - that's when th e rear tire went flat on Pederson's Suzuki. Beier had his chance and passed Pederson on the downhill, moving 10 second to take the overall, Pederson still managed to finish third, giving him second on points. In the 500cc Pro clash, Warren Reid rode a four-stroke A-Trak 10 the win in both rnotos for an easy overall win. Willy Simons (Han) scored a second p lace finish in the second rnoto 10 take the runnerup spot over Ed Arnet (Yam), since both had a second and third place finish to tie for third overall.
