RACING CHAMPIONSHIP VOL. 54 ISSUE 25 JUNE 27, 2017 P99 Yamalube Westby Racing's Mathew Scholtz ended up sev- enth and second in the Bazzaz Superstock 1000 class, some four seconds clear of third-place Superstock finisher Jake Lewis on the M4 Ecstar Suzuki GSX- R1000. Cycle World Suzuki's Hayden Gillim and TOBC Rac- ing's Danny Eslick rounded out the top 10. Defending two-time Superbike Champion Cameron Beaubier's difficult weekend continued with his second crash of the week- end (the first coming in Super- pole), and this time it was costly. Beaubier sped away at the start, but crashed out of the lead on the second lap. He was able to me. Seeing all the mistakes on the first lap, I felt like grip was down just a touch from what it was earlier in the day, but overall I just tried to ride a smart race and bring it home." Fourth place went to Bazzaz Superstock 1000 winner Bobby Fong, the Quicksilver Latus Mo- tors Kawasaki rider was in the mix near the front of the Super- bike pack early on before finish- ing 8.7 seconds behind. He was well clear of Helmet Sounds. com/Western Services/Meen Motorsports' Josh Herrin and his Yamaha R1 Superbike, with Kyle Wyman finishing sixth on the Motovation USA/Lucas Oil/KWR Yamaha. any costly mistakes as the race wore on and third was the best he could do on this day. "That's how it goes through the year, you have strong spots and weak spots," Hayes said. "Their bike is good in areas, our bike is good in areas. A lot of the race, since I haven't seen these guys on the track that much, I was trying to figure out what we have where. What we can do good and what they can do good, so it was a bit of a chess match. It seemed like it was hard right in the beginning, but then it got a little better for a while and kind of wobbled back and forth a little bit. The second half of the race was pretty tough for My Own Race: 24 TONI ELIAS 1-1 SUPERBIKE Toni Elias was understandably thrilled after his sweep in Utah. "I am so happy about this weekend," Elias said after Sunday's victory. "We won both races and the team did a great job with the bike. Yesterday I got so lucky after running off the track. I came back step-by-step, passed some riders, caught the lead group and won the race. Today I was there up front for the whole race. Two wins for the weekend was very important for the championship. We must continue like this." 95 JD BEACH 1-19 SUPERSPORT After winning Saturday's Supersport race, Monster Energy Yamaha's JD Beach got into it with his teammate Gerrett Gerloff (second on Saturday) and the result was both of them sliding off into the dirt—and he took all the blame. "In the last lap, when Garrett tucked the front in turn five, I was able to get a little bit of a drive on him go- ing into turn six," Beach said. "It looked like he went just a little bit wide, and I tried to get up underneath him. I went for it, and there just wasn't enough room. Today are the races you would like to forget. I'm sorry to Garrett, his crew, and the whole team for costing them a win. I want to move past this and go to Laguna." 1 GARRETT GERLOFF 2-17 SUPERSPORT "The first sector was really good," Gerloff said of race two. "I felt really strong, and then, going into turn five, I had a little moment where I almost crashed. I was able to save it, but I lost some time. I had to defend the inside, and I thought I had it cov- ered, but JD, at the last second, put it up underneath me, snagged my handlebar, and we both ended up going down. We picked the bikes up and got going again. No points today, which is unfortunate, but all in all, it was a racing incident. We'll both be back, stronger at Laguna. I lived to fight another day, and fight, I will."
