50 Years Ago July 6, 1967
We were gearing up for a big week of flat track racing at the Tulare Fairgrounds
50 years ago, and to pump everyone up, we featured Jimmy Odom, who was
expected to be a favorite to win, on the cover… The American Federation of
Motorcyclists (AFM) enjoyed a record number of 106 participants at the Cotati
road races… Weekly racing at Ascot was in full gear and Dan Haaby, Chuck
Jones and Mel Lacher were back at it again. This time it was Haaby's night to
celebrate.
40 Years Ago June 29, 1977
We tested the Harley-Davidson MX250 and it was pictured in action on the
cover of Cycle News 40 years ago… Gerrit Wolsink won the 500cc U.S. GP
at Carlsbad for a fourth straight time, but not by much. After the two motos, he
and Heikki Mikkola tied on points, but Wolsink was awarded the victory via total
elapsed time. Jim Pomeroy won the first moto, becoming the first American to
win a moto at the Carlsbad GP. (He fell in the first turn in the second moto).
20 Years Ago June 25, 1997
Ezra Lusk captured his first AMA 250cc National MX win, which came at Budds
Creek… For the second week in a row, Ducati's Mat Mladin won in the AMA
Superbike National Championship at Loudon… At the Terre Haute Half Mile,
Will Davis held off Scott Parker to take the victory… We had coverage of the
Isle of Man TT. Phillip McCallen was "the Man" of the week… Chris Smith was
the overall winner at the Two-Day ISDE Qualifier at Idaho City.

The Elf3 road racer was pictured on the cover 30 years ago. Alan Cathcart
gave us an in-depth look of this one-of-a-kind bike… The opening round of the
500cc AMA National MX Series got underway in San Antonio, Texas, where
Rick Johnson came away with the victory; Micky Dymond continued his win-
ning ways in the 125cc class… Kevin Schwantz celebrated his 23rd birthday
with his first-ever AMA/Camel Pro Series National
win at Bryar Motorsport Park in Laconia, New
Hampshire… Wayne Gardner won the 500cc
GP in Yugoslavia.
