Member~BIT d INOUSTRY ~ Mfi KEEPING UP WITH THE JONES Don J ones decided to divide up his racing stable of 17 motocross bikes among his two sons, Gary and DeWayne, and their racing teammate Jimmy Weinert. Gary would receive one-half of the bikes, DeWayne one-third of them andJimmy one-ninth. Well, Gary's share came to eigh t and one-half bikes, DeWayne's five and two-thirds bikes and Jimmy's one and eigh t·nin ths bikes. E.veryone was happy except Jimmy who didn't want to have to cut up a bike to give everyone his share. While Gary and Jimmy were arguing, DeWayne came up with a solution so that they wouldn't have to cut up one bike. He went over to Bruce Barons' house and borrowed Brucie's stocker and added it to the 17 bikes they already have. Now they had 18 bikes. Then Gary's share was nine bikes, DeWayne's was six and Jimmy's share totaled two bikes. Nine plus six plus two equals 17 so they had one bike left over and it happened to be Brucie's stocker which they promptly returned to Bruce with many thanks and everyone was happy. I report happily that the place has gone bananas abou t motorcycles. To date I have seen at least one example of every sort of two wheel concoction manufactured during the past five years. There is, however, an extreme shortage of safety helmets, which, although not mandatory are de riguer among the speed loving natives. Those who cannot obtain a helmet use a hollowed au t coco-nut half, seemingly the higger the native the smaller the coco-nut! _ federal As an erstwhile observer of mooted legislature, and all the nit-picking that en tails, it migh t be prudent to forewarn the geniuses in Washington of this possible South Seas . trend in safety apparel, because one would not wish to catch the feds with their safety standards down, would one? If past history is any criterion it may well be that this particular component will not measure up to the proposed stringent limits. .If this happens, it could, I suppose, be termed yet another case of nut-picking! Dear old cotton pickin' Ron Schneiders would enjoy the lushly vegetated trails of Tahiti. But I am not sure the ecologists would approve of Ron in a grass skirt. Upon arrival I found the gate locked. On it was a cardboard sign with sprayed red paint letters saying, "motorcycle race cancel". Although disappointed, I wasn't surprised that this poorly advertised race never got off the ground or even th at the track personnel could not spell cancelled! When Bob Barkhimer and Associates do manage to run "professional" races at Fremont, they resemble something like an "illegal abortion". They do not have electricity and get their power from a generator. One can expect this generator to bre.ak down, and one sits in the dark for about 45 minutes while they fix it. If you can't find the restrooms go out to the field behind the grandstands. If there is a full moon, you shouldn't have too much trouble finding several outhouses there. The reason Professional Motorcycle Racing does not have the respect, attention from the general news media, and larger purses it deserves is because of "rinky-dink" promoters that take your money and run (don't laugh J .C. Agajanian, this includes you!) Before I turned my car around to go home I counted eighteen (18) other cars doing the same. I wonder what they think of AMA Professional Racing? The 250 Honda which crossed the finish line third was a back-up bike for Silverthorn and Felty. It was ridden by a local college professor, Harry Backer.' • Now to get to the point of this letter. The 250 Honda which Silverthorn and Fetty rode was fast (106 mph),but not fast enough for their own likes. For the Baja 1,000 they will ride a Honda. Rumor has it that it will have a displacement of 523cc and 49 horsepower. The projected speed is 122 mph. My letter was only meant to clarify the names and facts regarding the accident at tl;>e Monarch Mine where I was unfortunate enough -to lose my bike down the shaft, nearly losing my life in the bargain. MOREAME We have both raced in Southern California with several differen t clubs and organizations and feel, without a doubt, that the American Motocross Enterprise (AME.) has the best run, organized, and highest level competition that we have entered. The AME is the only group with the least amount of time·lag between races, which means accurate, dependable starting times. Congratulations on your firm stand against helmet legislation and your appearance before the state committee' considering this bill. Obviously your presence helped to influence the committee members against voting for the measure. . With this great push by governmen t and by bicycling enthusiasts to encourage the use of bicycles to alleviate traffic and smog problems - has anyone thought of pushing the use of motorcycles for the same reasons? Bicycle riders and hikers are now given special treatment in the state parks for ovemight stays. This was because of the in terest of an assemblyman who .likes bike riding and saw some problems of long distance riders. Motorcycle riders now must pay full fees at state parks which entitle them to a fuJI campsite in which they rattle around with room to spare. With a special deal one site could accommodate three or four at a savings of spac.e and a savings of money to riders. What do you think 'about the chances for pursuing this angle? Thanks to the letters from motorcyclists to legislators and the lobbying of M.O.R.E, and certain individuals, the committee's minds were made up before the final hearing. It seems like two bikes could fit into one park campsite as easily as one car, Why don't you consult the Calif. State Parks & Recreation Dept. about it? ..Ed, 0-36 MXers Members of the Dirt Diggers 'orth MC have been elected by the District 36 Sports Committee to review the District motocross rules and change them to suit the needs of the motocross riders. We are now in the process of doing the deed but we would like to hear from other members of the District who have an opinion about the current motocross rules and changes that can better the rules in the future.
