GIVE IT TO UM I• By K.C. Brintnall POMONA, CAL.,July 9, 1972 -There are prooably a great many motocross riders who thoroughly. enjoy a course composed of potholes, ruts, and soft dust. These riders would have had a great time .at the Stumpjum,per- sponsored 0-37 point run at Osteen's Park in Pomona. Despite the exciting dust-induced special effects, such as collapsible berms, many 0-37 riders managed to turn in great performances in their motos. Mike Bganway's strong leads consistent first place finishes in the 125 Novice class showed great potential for a future in the Expert class. Newly CZ-mounted Tony Rodgers showed off the style that won him the Number I plate as he led th.e Am/Ex 250 class in all three motos. Bob Fisk (CZ) and Joe Erwin (Mai) impressed the scattered fans with their easy 1-2 fmishes in the 500 Am/Ex class. One of the most exciting dices of the day was a three.way battle among Mike Hannon (Bul), John Rice (DKW), and Jim O'Neal (Ric), for the overall win in the 125 Am/Ex class. O'Neal was very strong in the first moto, and spent all his time before the second moto tuning and testing his bike and pouring water on himself. Apparently, the Boy Scout motto doesn't work for everyone, as he finished behind Hannon and Rice in the second moto and his bike broke for a ON F in the third. Rice looked very good today, taking the lead early in all three motos, but apparently 'he feels a little lost without his Honda, for it was B-annon who finished high enough in each moto to pick up the overall win. Unfortunately, it was the dust that really scored the highest today, as it took a high toll of riders in each race, making the course more treacherous than it really was. It was the Novices that really suffered the most, as lack of experience made it doubly difficult for them to pick their way through the thick, billowing clouds. Considering the small number of participants, it seemed as though the Tony Rodgers limping Novice .bitterly remarked, "I'll never race a District 37 motocross here again!" There are probably many other less outspoken riders who feel the same way. Among the 10% trophies awarded by the Stumpjumpers there were none for Most Spectacular Riding Jersey, but it seems as though Harvey Sorenson (.Bull. a 250 Novice, should get some sort of award for the Kawasaki-green jersey with yellow flowered sleeves. Although the Stumpjumpers saw to it that the course had been watered the day before the race and in the morning before the first moto, the course seemed to have abs.orbed the water like a sponge. What did not immediately convert back to dust was turned into asphalt·hard ruts. Perhaps one of the reasons the tum-out for club-sponsored District 37 races is frequently low is that the riders are not getting what they want in the way of track preparation. As one 'i.l J) , • J Buffalo Breath hears about this! AI though there were serious problems with the dust today, Osteen's seems to have a greater potential as a bike park than has been realized· so far. Paul Marshall, president of Osteen's, pointed out that Gary and DeWayne Jones have set up a super-difficult Expert MX course on the back side of the park where they practice several times a week. In spite of the dust, I found a couple .... ;; of riders who felt it was a great course, watered or not. One rider was a Stumpjumper. The other didn't race today. . r¥~ S~~tFre- J ~o~"" "" po" '" f ~t.~~~~~"'\ c. ' ~",Oj~ 11·l'fltit"'.,!( 0" MONTESA DKW (SACHS) MAICC MOTO GUZZI MOTORCYCLE SALES, PARTS, A."lD SJ;.RV ICE - ARC. GAS.
