Spencer Lam, CAL., MAV 29 The crowd on hand was goodly sized and ready for some ty pically fine D-36 racing. They got it from mini heats to the big bore Expert Main won by Alex Jorgensen on the ancient age BSA. Alex wasn't on the National circuit despite the great fourth place at San Jose. An expected challenge from John Tavis never materialized as John got a bad start and is still favoring a bad knee. Tavis managed to save a fourth place with Tiffin Mullenax holding off Rick Otto for second and third. A special race that is sponsored by John Jorgensen each MeMOREial pits all the Black Plate Experts against each other with $50 at stake. It was of no ' surprise to see youngest son Kim take a tremendous win over brother Alex. To prove that that wasn't any fluke or whatever, Kim proceeded to make mince meat of the 250 Expert Main with the exception ofJeff Eide who put on a great duel. Ken Jackson held off the Concord Yamaha of Steve Brandt and old man Ray Huff garnered some badly needed points for his attempt on a ninth straight top 20 rating. Not bad . fo r 45 years old. Huff remains the only man to have ever held a Black Plate for every year there has been one and that goes back to when Jim Rice wore it in 1968. Dennis Spence wasn't about to let any grass grow when starter Jerry Carr got the green in hand. He left town and that ended the win part of the 500 Expert Main. Sal Hoffman tried to catch up but couldn't and Steve Brandt came in with the th ird over Kritzer. One of the best races of the night was the first one where Johnny West beat out Jerry Kennedy, Jr. in a tight fight that had the crowd buzzing. The Pee-Wees make hardly any noise but the two mitey-mites put on a show and a half with handlebar to handlebar racing and passing and the whole bit. Fred Merkel proved that this was really his track with far out wins in both the 80 and 100 Expert Mini Mains . Fred was running second in each but made some mighty speedy moves at the infamous tree turn to cop both wins. Results in Results Section. • Slack the man to beat By W. H. Spencer ORLAND, CAL••MAY 30 &.3 1 A two day extravaganza drew a fair amounl of riders for the Memorial weekend setting of two half mile sportsman shows. Rodger Slack seemed to come out of the doldrums for the weekend picking up some 19 points in the last week and moving from the middle of the top 20 White Plate list to seventh, with a first and a second each day. Sunday he had it pretty much to himself in the 250 and leading the 360 when Don Bailey on yet another Boss framed Yamaha went by for the win. Rick Delac y took third in the 360 and held Rusty Davis at bay for a second in the 250. Len Castro was debating whether or not to try and ride Expert after winning . the 250 Junior on Sunday but went with the Junior ride on Monday and was leading when Gary Rossi snuck up on ,him and took the win. Most of the little classes were multiple wins for the two days with one prominent change for Troy Cummings. Tony Deatherage left after winning the 100 class on Sunday. This gave Troy the open end of that class for Monday. Racca pressed Jacobson for four laps in the second moto, then lost a position to Marvin Sykes (Hon) when he overshot a turn. Four laps later they were still in th at order - but those four laps provided some good show for the fans. Mini A rider Ken New (Vam) travels each Friday from Richland to catch a race - four hours each direction. His efforts are usually rewarded and again Ken took home another first overall. In 250 Pro dicing the overall went to Randy Schweizer (C.A). First moto winner Mark Kaestner (Mai) pulled back to the pits after a re-start and the second moto became the exclusive property of Rick Benek - who came out with a nice ride and third overall. Rick Weidman (Hon) put together his three-three score for second money. • Results in Results Section.
