Gaston Rahier cleans Belgian 125 GP; CZ's second third By David and MarQery Maltais/ Asahi Pentax HOESELT, BELGIUM,MAY 30 Gaston Rahi er, reigning World Champion and Suzuki's star in the 125cc GP class, romped to a double victory with a combi ned margin o f 82.5 seconds for both Grand Prix races afte r his only rival, Honda's Marty Smith retired in th e fir st race with multiple m e ch ani c al problems th at were impossibl e to repair in time fo r the second co n test - The gate dropped at tw o forty-five an d the firs t race got under way with Gaston and Marty bl ast ing o ut in front of th e pack. Marty stuck to Gaston lik e glue a n d kept pushing th e World Champion to th e limit. Gaston could n't pull away from th e young, st rong rider an d the Champ ke p t darting glances over his shoulder as he tried harder to put some dirt between hims elf and his rival. On the third lap Marty looked down at the rear right side of hi s bike. His righ t foo t had been fee ling some thing was wrong in the brake as the pedal kept tapping his boot sa le. It was only a minor problem; the brake cab le was being hit by th e spokes of the rear wheel. Mar ty had dropped back a little so he started pushing harder to catch Gast on whe n th e Honda broke o ut from under him with th e rear hub smashing and th e st eering races coming apart. This put Marty o ut of the race after five laps and left Gaston all alo ne in first place with no o ne even close. . The comp lete rear wheel was repl aced but when they tried to ge t the fro nt end back in o rder th ey were stopped so lid. The tightening nut on th e st eering stem was tighten ed down all the way but still the fro nt end was wobbly . Honda's effort in Bel gium came to a depressing halt. At the first corn er Gast on was third ' but by the en d of th e lap he had passed both riders, Greisch and Goinger , one c oming off a jump and the other through a tight corner. The res t of th e race was Gaston 's, and he, stretch the lead wi th out a sin gle challenge to fif ty seconds. Jury Khoudiakov, a Ru ssian wh ose brother con test s th e 500cc GP class, moved his CZ up from seve nth to pl ace seco nd . The race for third was a sensational scrap b·ctween Velk y and Harvey. Velky pushed harder until Harvey fina lly made the mistake th at cost him th ird place. He hit a patch o f mud on the last q uarter of the last lap and th e rear wh eel spun out en ough fo r Velky to m an a ge to squirt by .
