Shane O'Banion (Hon) Following in the footsteps of last year's success, the 2017 edition of the OKC Mile Presented by Indian Motorcycle filled the Remington Park grandstands with fans of all ages. Honoring their Oklahoma Flat Track heritage Scott Adams and Ronnie Jones were co-Grand Marshalls with Ronnie taking a couple of laps on his RS750 Honda to help kick off the night's activities. While the calendar says it is still spring this was the third race of the year to be held with triple digit temperatures. The heat and wind made for trying conditions for the track crew, riders and teams alike. "The track was a pretty good, safe cushion today," said Halbert. "It was a long, tough race for sure with the heat. It was the most physically demanding race we've had all year." Brad Baker, once again, fell just short of a win that was in his grasp. "I definitely want to get that win. I just feel like I've been so close, yet so far away." said Baker. "It's alright though, I've got a great team. Indian Motorcycle backed by Allstate and all the crew are doing a great job. I'm having a lot of fun racing. That's the main thing and we're healthy. I'm looking forward to Lima. I've just got to keep work- ing and it will all come together." Fuel consumption may be becom- ing a problem. For a few weeks riders have been declining to ride the "sighting" lap prior to the main event. Jared Mees ran out of fuel on the back straight as he carried the checkered flag for a lap. Don Taylor (Memphis Shades/Babe DeMay Yamaha) ran out of fuel on lap 22 dropping from 12th to 14th position. Jared Mees' fourth win of the year gives him 24 all time wins and moves him into a tie for 12th with Dick Mann. It also moves him out of a tie for this year's points lead. Mees now holds an eight-point lead over Bryan Smith in the AFT Twins' points race. Sammy Halbert continues to hold third, but is 53 points back of Mees. Brad Baker is creeping closer just 12 behind Halbert. Jeffrey Carver is fifth. Shayna Texter's win also ex- tended her lead in the AFT Singles points battle. She now holds an 11-point lead over Kolby Carlile. Brandon Price is 23 off the lead. Tristan Avery and Ben Lowe are tied for fourth 47 points down. Jeffrey Carver had a trying week- end as van problems en route from Illinois left him scrambling to get to the race track on time. Despite little to no sleep and maintaining his own program, Carver came away with a ninth-place finish in the main. After a few weeks of being "unoffi- cially" combined, the Zanotti Rac- ing Team and Bill Werner Racing Team have joined to back Briar Bauman on Kawasaki Ninja 650s. After breaking the Zanotti Kawasaki in the semi as he squeaked out a ninth-place finish, Bauman came back on Werner's bike from the penalty line to finish sixth. Briefly...
