VOL. 54 ISSUE 24 JUNE 20, 2017 P55 Things started out a little rocky for Gomez, who suffered a set- back after a stumble on the first hill climb, only a few hundred feet from the start. But he got to work and made his way through the pack and into the lead within the first hour of the race. Jonny Walker, Wade Young and Webb all took turns leading the way, but once Gomez was into the lead, he held it to the finish. Webb came into the event looking to improve on his runner- up finish from 2016, but had to fight his way through bad arm pump, commenting that his arms were completely "locked up" at one point in the race. But the former EnduroCross champ pushed through it and was happy to hang on to a podium position. Americans had a strong showing at the Erzberg, with Webb, joining Kyle Redmond, Colton Haaker, Mitch Carvolth and Keith Curtis at the Iron Giant. Redmond, a 10-year veteran of the race, had to call it a day after smashing his foot on a rock that came tumbling at him on a climb. Curtis carded a finish, crossing the line in 20th place while Carvolth made it through an impressive 24 of 25 checkpoints before tim- ing out. Haaker ended the day 14th among the 25 riders who recorded a finish.
