P142 50 Years Ago June 29, 1967 A photo of one of Cycle News' own was featured on the cover 50 years ago. Contributor Maureen Lee was caught in not one of her finest moments during a scrambles race in California. Despite the bumps and bruises, she still got her weekly column turned in on time!... We told you about Frank "Wheelie" Wheeler. Wheelie rode his 90cc Ace Hodaka from Athena, Oregon, to Anchorage, Alaska. The little Ace carried the 200-pound, six-foot rider all the way to Anchorage "without fail." 40 Years Ago June 22, 1977 One of our cover stories was a preview of the Carlsbad U.S. Grand Prix of Motocross. We asked: Would Gerrit Wolsink win it for the fourth straight time? Would Roger DeCoster finally have some good luck at Carlsbad? Would Brad Lackey break through and win in front of the home crowd?... Larry Roeseler and Jack Johnson teamed up to win the Baja Internacional… Ted Boody won his first GNC at the Full House Classic Half Mile at the Delaware State Fairgrounds… Dick Burleson won the Trask Two-Day. 20 Years Ago June 18, 1997 Ducati's Mat Mladin won his second AMA Superbike National of the year at Road America, and the Aussie was pictured on the cover… Aaron Slight and Carl Fogarty traded wins at the Hockenheimring round of the World Superbike Championship… Michael Doohan won the French Grand Prix at Paul Ricard… We interviewed Suzuki MX Team Manager Roger DeCoster, focusing on Jeremy McGrath's first losing season and DeCoster's rocky relationship with team rider Mike LaRocco… We tested BMW's first-ever entry into the cruiser market, the R1200C. The AMA felt it was not safe… Rick Johnson wrapped up his third 250cc National MX title in Colorado… Bubba Shobert was the big winner at the Peoria TT… Wayne Gardner edged out Randy Mamola to win the Austrian Grand Prix… Larry Roeseler and Ted Hunnicutt won the Baja 500.
