50 Years Ago June 22, 1967
Our spotlight of the week was flat track racing from Ascot Part and pictured on
the cover 50 years ago was a young Chuck Jones who put the hurt on the
track's regulars stars when he trounced the "extablisment." For the second
week in a row, Jones and his BSA won the Trophy Dash… We covered the 21
st
running of the Pasadena M.C.'s Greenhorn Enduro. Bob Steffan and his 650
Triumph were the big winners… Motorcyclists scored a big win by succeeding in
stopping the "Motorcycle Danger Bill" (A.B. 978)
in the California state legislature.
40 Years Ago June 15, 1977
Mike Bell helped us evaluate our 1977 Yamaha YZ125 test bike, and he was
pictured on the cover tearing it up at Saddleback Park… We had coverage
of the AMA Grand National Championship/Camel Pro Series from Louisville,
where Gary Scott scored his second consecutive win, this time over Steve
Morehead and Jay Springsteen… Marty Smith took the win at the New
Orleans Supercross… World Trials was held in Jeddo, Michigan, where
Frenchman Charles Coutard, "riding a Bultaco, took the first win of his career."
20 Years Ago June 11, 1997
We had the first exclusive ride on the Bimota Vdue, which was looking pretty
on the cover of Cycle News 30 years ago… Honda pulled the wraps off the
1998 CR125R, which featured an aluminum frame for the first time… Mick
Doohan won the Austrian Grand Prix… Rich King was the big winner at the
Starved Rock Short Track at LaSalle Speedway in Michigan… We featured an
interview with Marlboro Yamaha's Jean-Michel Bayle who was just getting his
feet wet in grand prix road racing… Stefan Everts won the British MX GP.

Kevin Hines was pictured on the cover 30 years ago for winning the ISDE
Two-Day Qualifier in Massachusetts… Scott Parker chalked up another victory,
this time it was at the Louisville Half Mile, where he edged out Don Estep
for the win… Ricky Johnson and Donny Schmit shared the spotlight at the
125/250cc National MX at Secession MX in
Anderson, South Carolina… Wayne Gardner took
over the World Championship Road Race points
lead after winning the Italian GP at Monza.
