P144 50 Years Ago June 15, 1967 We ran a photo of the large crowd at the International Custom Car & Motorcycle Show at the Los Angeles Sports Arena. We reported that 91,000 people attended and that the motorcycles "stole the show." A motorcycle simulator, or "teaching machine," that was developed by Cycle News was a big hit and revealed that every rider who tried it made "errors" that could've been dangerous in real life… Emil Ahola was the top rider at the Memorial Day Classic at Graham Speedway in Oregon. 40 Years Ago June 8, 1977 Some of the things that grabbed the headlines 40 years ago was Tony DiStefano clinching his third-straight AMA 250 Motocross title in Mt. Morris, Pennsylvania, Larry Roeseler winning the Virginia City Grand Prix, and Brad Lackey winning a 500cc grand prix moto in Sweden… At the Dutch 500cc World Championship MX, Heikki Mikkola won both motos that vaulted into the points lead, swooping past Roger DeCoster. A week later in Sweden, Mikkola won the overall again, stretching his lead to eight points. 20 Years Ago June 4, 1997 It was a historic day at High Point where Damon Bradshaw, who recently had come out of retirement, won the wet High Point National. It was his first win in four years. Scott Sheak captured his first national win in the 125cc class… We reported that Jeff Ward, driving a Team Cheever G Force-Auroa, had finished third in the Indianapolis 500 behind winner Arie Luyendyk and Scott Goodyear. At one point in the race, Ward led, making him only the second rookie and third driver to lead his first Indy 500.
