We ran a photo of the large crowd at the International Custom Car &
Motorcycle Show at the Los Angeles Sports Arena. We reported that 91,000
people attended and that the motorcycles "stole the show." A motorcycle
simulator, or "teaching machine," that was developed by Cycle News was a
big hit and revealed that every rider who tried it made "errors" that could've
been dangerous in real life… Emil Ahola was the top rider at the Memorial Day
Classic at Graham Speedway in Oregon.

Some of the things that grabbed the headlines 40 years ago was Tony
DiStefano clinching his third-straight AMA 250 Motocross title in Mt. Morris,
Pennsylvania, Larry Roeseler winning the Virginia City Grand Prix, and Brad
Lackey winning a 500cc grand prix moto in Sweden… At the Dutch 500cc
World Championship MX, Heikki Mikkola won both motos that vaulted into the
points lead, swooping past Roger DeCoster. A week later in Sweden, Mikkola
won the overall again, stretching his lead to eight points.

It was a historic day at High Point where Damon Bradshaw, who recently
had come out of retirement, won the wet High Point National. It was his first
win in four years. Scott Sheak captured his first national win in the 125cc
class… We reported that Jeff Ward, driving a Team Cheever G Force-Auroa,
had finished third in the Indianapolis 500 behind winner Arie Luyendyk and
Scott Goodyear. At one point in the race, Ward led, making him only the
second rookie and third driver to lead his first Indy 500.

Nothing captures your attention more than a dirt bike riding on the black sand
beaches of Hawaii which was featured on the cover of Cycle News 30 years
ago to accompany our coverage of the Mauna Kea 200 Enduro… We covered
the AMA Superbike at Brainerd, where Wayne Rainey remained undefeated
in the 1987 championship… Rick Johnson and Keith Turpin were the 250cc-
and 125cc-class winners at the East Rutherford, New Jersey, Supercross round
at the Meadowlands… Steve Eklund won the
