injected, there will be full tuning
of the ECU, just like a modern
four-stroke, making it the power
adjustable to your liking.
I tried to find ways to confuse
the fuel-injection system and
cause it to run erratic throughout
the day, it just never happened.
While playing around on the dirt
roads I'd shift up to sixth gear
while cruising about 10 mph and
then crank the throttle wide open.
Like a fuel-injected four-stroke,
the 250 and 300 would begin
smoothly accelerating without
a hiccup or cough. The system
just plain works awesome. I also
found myself riding a gear higher
than I could on a carbureted bike
through technical terrain thanks
to the consistent delivery of
power without any surges. You
have to look carefully and through
the right sunlight to see any
smoke out of the tailpipe when
the TPI is running, and at the end
of the day the muffler core didn't
have a trace of un-burnt premix
on the 250 and 300 at Erzberg,
which really let us feel the differ-
ences. We made all the climbs
on both bikes, but, in the end,
found it just a little easier on the
very torquey 300, thanks to it's
incredible off-idle torque. If you
are a true 300 rider, the addition
of fuel injection to the 250 won't
change your mind, you'll have to
wait for the 300 to be truly happy.
When the technology develops
further and more bikes in the
KTM two-stroke line become fuel
oil. This can be a little unnerving,
but because only air and oil are
traveling into the crank case and
fuel is introduced in the transfer
ports, the premix oil (not pre-
mixed anymore) isn't diluted with
fuel, making the oil more effec-
