P136 50 Years Ago June 8, 1967 Desert racing legend J.N. Roberts was pictured on the cover flying his Husqvarna through the air en route to another victory… We reported that Dick Mann had been appointed to the staff of the Yankee Motor Corporation as Manager, Research and Development Manager, and as Competition Manager… If you owned a BMW motorcycle, you probably attended the Annual BMW Club Picnic at Griffith Park in Los Angeles, California. Cycle News covered the well- attended, two-day gathering of all things BMW. 40 Years Ago June 1, 1977 A photo from the AMA MX National from Michigan (RedBud) was one of three shots that made the cover of Cycle News 40 years ago. Tony DiStefano stretched out his points lead with another victory… A photo of Jay Springsteen was also on the cover for winning the Oklahoma National Half Mile… We had coverage of the Scottish Six Days Trial. Martin Lampkin was the winner; Americans Bernie Schreiber and Marland Whaley finished 11th and 13th, respectively… President Jimmy Carter continued his crusade to shut down ORV activities on public lands. 20 Years Ago May 28, 1997 It was 20 years ago in Las Vegas that Jeff Emig captured the 1997 AMA Supercross crown, putting an end to Jeremy McGrath's four-year title run. But that wasn't the only big news of the night—Doug Henry made motorcycling history when he captured the main-event win on the works Yamaha YZM400F four-stroke. It was the first time anyone had won a supercross final on a thumper, and it was also the bike's first SX appearance… Mick Doohan recorded his 37th GP victory, tying him for second on the all-time list with Mike Hailwood.
