Drag racing from Irwindale, California, was featured on the cover of Cycle News
50 years ago. A shot of George Tupper winning the Jr. Gas class was shown.
He reached a speed of 105.62 mph on his Triumph… Since flagmen at local
racers are usually volunteers, we ran a feature on how to do the job correctly…
The "BSA Wrecking Crew," made up of Dan Haaby, Sammy Tanner and
Ralph White, continued to wreck havoc at Ascot Park… We covered the
Modesto Hillclimb, mostly a collection of photos
of spectacular get-offs.

Action from the San Jose Mile was featured on the cover. Mike Kidd led the way
ahead of Chuck Palmgren, Steve Eklund, Skip Aksland and eventual winner
Gary Scott… A CN reader sent us a photo of a sign he saw advertising propane
for sale with the words written on it "no service to Sierra Club members."
(By the way, the propane sold for 55 cents a gallon.)… Tony DiStefano won
the 250cc National MX round in Axton, Virginia… Roger DeCoster and Gerrit
Wolsink went 1-2 at the 500cc World MX opener in Austria.

It was another Kawasaki sweep in the AMA 125/250cc National MX Series.
Jeff Emig and Ricky Carmichael continued their winning ways at Glen Helen,
and we pictured them both on the cover 20 years ago… Our Open-class two-
stroke shootout, made up of the Honda CR500R, Kawasaki KX500, KTM
360 SX and TM 300E, focused on how they performed on the trail, not the
track… We took a close-up look at some of the trick bikes being raced in the
National Four-Stroke MX Series.

Dual sport riding was our topic of the week and our cover story 30 years ago.
We featured an article on how fun, and even a little adventurous, a simple dual
sport ride can be from right out of your house. We also featured on the cover a
photo of Honda's new 32-valve oval piston V-4 engine out of the NR750… We
covered Rick Johnson and Micky Dymond's
250 and 125cc National MX wins at Southwick…
Wayne Rainey narrowly beat Kevin Schwantz at
the AMA Superbike round at Road Atlanta.
