50 Years Ago May 25, 1967
We ran a photo of a hapless enduro rider battling the mud on his Suzuki during
the Chicken Enduro in Northern California, which was staged just a few miles
from Yosemite National Park. Of the 276 starters, 170 made it to the finish, many
of the defeated simply turning around and heading back due to the challenging
conditions… We also covered the Greenhorn Enduro… Bud Budschat was
the big winner at the Bellingham Flat Track Championship, hosted by the Mt.
Baker Motorcycle Club.
40 Years Ago May 18, 1977
Bob Messer was pictured on the cover 40 years ago. Riding for Team Army,
Messer took the overall win at the Fort Hood Two-Day Reliability Trials riding a
400 Maico… American Steve Baker took over the points lead in the Formula
750 World Championship when he won in Jarama, Spain… We profiled local
up-and-coming motocrosser Val Tamietti… We asked the question: Can "go-
ing faster" be taught? Then we attended the Keith Code Rider Improvement
Program for the answer.

Greg Albertyn won 250cc Hangtown National Motocross in Sacramento, while
Ricky Carmichael smoked 'em in the 125cc class, winning both motos… Alex
Crivelle won the Spanish Grand Prix at Jerez in front of the home crowd, said to be
approximately 100,000… Carl Fogarty won the World Superbike Championship
round at Donington Park… We interviewed flat track racer Kevin Atherton… We
also interviewed motocrosser Stephane Roncada… Mike Lafferty won the AMA
National Enduro in Shelton, Washington… Mike Young Jr. suffered a spinal injury
in practice during the Four-Stroke Nationals at Glen Helen.

We featured Fred Merkel on the cover to accompany our interview with "Flyin'
Fred"… We reported that President Ronald Reagan visited the Harley-Davidson
plant in York, Pennsylvania, where he "pointed to the facility as living proof that
his trade policies are working"… Dave Bertram and Kevin Hines tied on points
at the Little Polecat National Enduro in Twain Harte, California, but Bertram came
away the winner via the tiebreaker points… Randy
Morales won the Rosarito Beach Gran Prix.
