T
he American Flat Track Championship returned to Phoenix for
round four and while not quite as hot as last year's event, tem-
peratures were still in triple digits and a strong west wind raised
havoc with competitors and track crew alike. With long straightaways
and relatively tight turns, the mile oval developed a narrow slick
groove that was unforgiving to anyone who ventured off it.
