IRWIN WINS
NORTH WEST 200
D
ucati rider Glenn Irwin has taken his
first victory in the North West 200 in
Northern Ireland, May 13-14, holding off
a determined charge from 20-time North
West winner Alastair Seeley (Tyco BMW)
on the last lap.
Changing conditions gave enough
sunlight for the seven-lap Superbike
feature race to be run in dry conditions,
with Irwin, Seeley and the second Tyco
BMW of Ian Hutchinson pulling clear of
the field.
Irwin and Seeley swapped the lead
constantly around the treacherous
street venue, Seeley even hitting the
grass at 200 mph after pulling out of the
slipstream on the run to the University
Hairpin.
Irwin would eventually hold on for the
narrowest of victories from Seeley and
Hutchinson, with Michael Dunlop (Suzuki)
fourth and Michael Rutter (BMW) fifth. CN
MCGUINESS SUFFERS HUGE CRASH AT THE
NORTH WEST 200
J
ohn McGuinness is out of the 2017 Isle
of Man TT after crashing in qualifying for
the North West 200 in Northern Ireland,
May 13-14, suffering a compound fracture
of the tibia and fibula, four broken verte-
brae and three broken ribs.
McGuinness—a 23-time winner at the
Isle of Man—crashed at Primrose Hill and
was taken to the Royal Victoria Hospital in
Belfast in a stable condition where he is
currently undergoing treatment.
The incident also put Guy Martin's return
to international road racing into disarray. At
the North West, if a rider crashes, his machine is automatically impounded. That
means the Honda Racing Team was not able to collect any crash data to find the
cause of the incident, and thus decided to pull Martin out of the Superstock race
in case the cause of McGuiness's crash was mechanical. CN
Irwin's victory
came after a
titanic battle
with Alastair
Seeley.
