Tomac gave him one final shot to
see if he could knock Dungey out
of contention and win the title.
"The whole race, I could sense
that, like, 'All right, Eli's got to
do what he's got to do,' and it's
totally understandable," Dungey
said. "It was the last lap. I was
hoping Eli was just going to, like,
just keep her steady. 'Run it in for
your win and I'll just run behind
you,' you know? Well, I passed
him off the triple, and as soon as I
passed him, I was like, 'Oh, man,
I shouldn't have done that.' Right
away, I looked behind like, 'Where
is he?!' in the air. 'I've got to go
to the inside,' and then when I
looked back around, I went to the
outside. I'm like, 'What are you
doing?!' I just carried myself. But
it is what it is, and as he was kind
of checking up a little bit, I knew
Jason [Anderson] was coming,
and you're hoping and praying
just to keep her steady, so it was
quite interesting and it was quite
tough, but it's racing."
The move handed the lead to
Rockstar Energy Husqvarna's
Jason Anderson, and Tomac was
held up enough with Dungey that
Anderson was actually able to
sneak away with the win, while
Tomac hung on for second, just
in front of his teammate Josh
Grant, and then Dungey cruised it
home in fourth place, which was
enough for his third-consecutive
AMA Supercross Championship,
and fourth in his career, by five
points over Tomac.
Dungey was incensed immedi-
ately afterward.
