We caught the spirit of trail riding when we ran a photo of off-road enthusiasts
Sandi and Roy Taylor in a canyon near Calico, California… We covered the
fourth annual Tri-State Classic Scrambles at Sprockets Raceway in Bakersfield,
California. Bultaco Pursang-mounted Wid Payne blew them all away… Evel
Knievel and his "cohorts" held a two-hour motorcycle stunt show at Ascot
Park; the show included a ramp-to-ramp jump over a semi truck and trailer that
Knievel, of course, had no troubles making…
Kawasaki revealed photos of its new A 7 Avenger,
C 2 SS Roadrunner and A 1 SS Samura.

Our cover story 40 years ago was the AFM 6-Hour road race from Willow
Springs. Wes Cooley Jr. was pictured on the cover because he and partner
Tony Murphy came away with the win… In Herman, Nebraska, Bob Hannah
returned to his winning ways in the AMA 250 National MX Championship. He
won both motos… We took a close-up look at the soon-to-be released Harley-
Davidson 250 MX, which was being manufactured and assembled in Italy,
not Milwaukee… Larry Roeseler and John Rutten teamed up to win the Las
Vegas 400.

The AMA Superbike National was our cover story 20 years ago, and Kawasaki's
Doug Chandler was featured on the cover for nabbing the win… Mick Doohan
won the Japanese Grand Prix… John Kocinski won a wet World Superbike
round at Misano… Kevin Windham became the seventh different rider of
the year to win a Supercross, his first of the year coming at Charlotte Motor
Speedway… Ty Davis won the Jericho National Hare & Hound in Utah… Alan
Cathcart tested the Ducati ST2 Sport Tourer.

We tested the latest KDX200 from Kawasaki, which was pictured in action
on the front page of Cycle News 30 years ago… We were on hand to cover
Kawasaki's 1-2 sweep at the Tampa Supercross, where Jeff Ward and Ron
Lechien ruled; Keith Turpin won the 125 class… The Wayne Rainey and
Keven Schwantz-led United States team won the 17th Annual Transatlantic
Challenge in England… Paul Krause and Mike
"Downhill" Alexander got together and won the
Las Vegas 300… And speaking of the desert, we
interviewed desert ace Dan Smith.
