ROAD RACE ROUND 2 / APRIL 29-30, 2017 ROAD ATLANTA / ATLANTA, GEORGIA P98 2017 MOTOAMERICA AMA/FIM NORTH AMERICAN ROAD RACING CHAMPIONSHIP 53 VALENTIN DEBISE 2-1 SUPERSPORT Team Hammer's Valentin Debise picked up where he left off from last week's race at Austin, where he took second in the Supersport class on Saturday. "I believe if the red flag didn't happen, I could have gotten a gap and pulled away," the M4 medAge Suzuki rider said. "But after the red flag it was a little bit different story. I had a plan for the last lap to pass after the bottom of the hill, but [Gerloff] was just too far away, and I didn't want to do anything stupid and risk crashing us both. Second is fine for today, but we'll have a new approach ready for tomorrow to try to get the win." And he did. "Yesterday I was pushing everything I had, and today (as well)," Debise said after Sunday's win. "I think we made a little move on the bike this morning and that helped me a lot. I was able to be much more persistent. So I think compared to yesterday the pace was a little bit faster [today], but Garrett and JD were able to follow me." 85 JAKE LEWIS 3-1 SUPERSTOCK 1000 "Obviously, I want to win, and we have the equipment to win," said Team Hammer/M4 medAge Suzuki Jake Lewis after Saturday's race. "It's just a matter of getting everything working the way it need to. We've had a few setbacks during the weekend, but the team just keeps fighting. It was a good first race." But the second race was better. "I got a real good start. I was like fifth or sixth, the first [Superstock] behind the Superbikes," Lewis said. "I was really close to them and then [Bobby] Fong came past me, and I just stuck right on him. Honestly, my bike was so good at the beginning of the race, so I just followed him because his bike was moving around a lot compared to yes- terday. [Kyle] Wyman passed me and Fong on the straightaway and for some reason Bobby was way on the inside going into turn 10. He had the thing going sideways, got on the curb and tucked the front end and Mathew's [Scholtz] bike, I think, stopped. Those were my two biggest competitors and when I looked back I saw [Jake] Gagne. I didn't even know where the next Superstock battle was, so it was honestly really hard be- cause there was still 14 laps to go, so I backed it down a notch to just ride at that pace and watch my pit board. Gagne was gaining on me, but then we kind of stayed even. On the last lap, I was running out of gas, which happened to me in both races at COTA and yesterday. Today it was even worse because I started running out on the back straightaway with two laps to go. The whole last lap I was going into the corners so hard to just coast. Luckily, I made it around to the finish to grab my first MotoAmerica win." 1 GARRETT GERLOFF 1-2 SUPERSPORT "We have a really good bike in this brand-new R6," Garrett Gerloff (Monster Energy/Yamalube/Y.E.S./Graves Yamaha) said after Saturday's Supersport win said. "The red flag (that stopped the race) actually helped me because we were able to make a couple of changes to the bike, and it was even bet- ter after the restart. We've got the bike set up so that it's really strong at the end." After Sunday's second place, he said, "My bike felt good, and I felt like I could run the pace today without too much difficulty. Valentin was riding well, and it seemed like it was going to come down to the last lap between us, which it did. I tried to outbrake him, but he got past me, and I just didn't have an opportunity to pass him back before the checkered flag." 95 JD BEACH 3-3 SUPERSPORT "After the race was red-flagged and re-started with eight laps to go, I knew I needed to do something quick," said JD Beach (Monster Energy/Yamalube/ Y.E.S./Graves Yamaha) after Saturday's Supersport race. "So I got a good start, but then Valentin came flying past me. After that, I made a mistake and just blew the turn. I'm happy that I was able to get back up to third place again, which is where I was before the re-start. I'm looking forward to race two tomorrow." Beach put together another third on Sunday. "I want to win the races, and make passes, but, this track hasn't been one of my strong ones."
