PHILLIPS DOUBLES AT SPANISH ENDUROGP
F
rom the frozen tundra of
Finland at the opening round
of the 2017 EnduroGP World
Championship, the second stop
of the series took competitors
to the warm, dusty conditions of
Spain where new winners topped
the podium in all classes.
Sherco rider Matt Phillips
took his first EnduroGP class
win of the year on day one of
the two-day AMV GP of Spain,
commenting, "Man, that was a
tough day. I don't think I've ever
ridden a track as rutted and beat
up as that."
The rocky hills of Puerto
Lumbreras deteriorated quickly,
leaving thick dust and deep ruts
throughout the course, which
only got worse for day two. But
once again, it was Phillips who
stood atop the podium at the
end of the day, this time with
Christophe Nambotin and Steve
Holcombe finishing right on his
heels. Phillips nabbed the win by
a scant 0.29 of a second ahead
of Nambotin, with Holcombe
less than a second behind in
third.
"It's been an awesome
weekend for me and the Sherco
guys," Phillips commented. "I
can't remember the last time it
was that close between three
guys for the win. I can't ask for
more than two wins."
In the E2 class (250cc), the
win went to Josep Garcia on
Saturday, who secured his first-
ever senior class victory in the
process. Round-one winner Eero
Remes took the E2 victory on
day two, piloting his TM to the
win and extending his lead in the
E2 championship standing. CN
