50 Years Ago May 4, 1967
Featured on the cover of Cycle News 50 years ago was a photo of Orie Cole
who we said took to the desert two-and-a-half years ago to begin a racing
career at 44 years of age… The monthly AMA sportsman road races at Carlsbad
Raceway featured a double winner in the premier classes. And who was that
winner? Don Vesco… We reported that John Klocker and Bill Blakeslee had
successfully ridden a 50cc ISDT replica Hercules from Tijuana to La Paz. They
competed the 1000-mile trip in 70 hours and 30
minutes.
40 Years Ago April 27, 1977
Local motocross racer Val Tamietti was pictured on the cover from the
weekly CMC motocross at Saddleback Park. Chasing Tamietti in the photos
is "Radical" Ron Turner… In our Voices section we ran a letter that read: "I
am pleased to announce to you my upcoming participation in the Superbowl
of Motocross at the L.A. Coliseum on July 9, 1977" – Roger DeCoster…
Jimmy Ellis won the AMA 250cc National MX in Tennessee… Road racer
Mike Clarke talked about his "endo" at 170 mph at Daytona.
20 Years Ago April 23, 1997
Repsol Honda's Mick Doohan was featured on the cover 20 years ago for
winning the 500cc Grand Prix opener in Malaysia… Two laps from the end,
Suzuki's Jeremy McGrath washed out in a turn and handed the Pontiac
Supercross win to Yamaha's Ezra Lusk; Stephane Roncada won the
125cc class… Kevin Hines won the Tecate 250K Enduro in Mexico… Paul
Edmondson won the GNCC/Hare Scrambles National at Loretta Lynn's…
We interviewed Steve Wise… Justin Buckelew was the big winner at the
World Mini Grand Prix at Las Vegas Motor Speedway.

Jeff Emig made the cover of Cycle News 30 years ago. He was the talk of the
town after winning the 80cc Stock Expert 12+ and Super Mini classes at the
NMA World Mini Grand Prix at Las Vegas MX Park in Henderson, Nevada. John
Kitsch won all three motos in the Kawasaki Race of Champions… Kevin Hines
won the Fool's Gold National Enduro in Georgetown, California… We covered
the La Carrera Classic II Road Race won by
Geoff McCarthy.
