We were so impressed by the performance of "little" Dennis Roberson at
the Modesto Scrambles that we put him on the front page of Cycle News 50
years ago. Roberson rode his 50cc Tohatsu against the big bikes—the 90s—and
smoked them all… The AFM National Road Race visited Stardust Raceway in
Las Vegas and Buddy Parriott and Art Bauman came away with an arm full
of trophies… Half-mile racing resumed at Ascot and Sammy Tanner recorded
his 345th victory; the hot novice of the day was
Rick Woods.

Our cover story 40 years ago was our coverage of the Hangtown National
Motocross, and Jim Pomeroy was pictured on the cover, although he
didn't get an overall victory. Those instead went to Marty Smith (250cc) and
Danny LaPorte (125cc); Pomeroy did win a moto, though. We also featured
an interview with Pomeroy who had recently made the switch from Bultaco to
Honda and from Europe to America… We covered the Tecate 500 Enduro; of
the 260 starters, less than 100 made it to the finish, one of those was winner
Malcolm Smith.

A Kinney Jones photo of Jeremy McGrath pulling the holeshot at the St. Lou-
is Supercross was featured on the cover 20 years ago. McGrath went on to win
the race, just his second of the series, to keep his title hopes alive… Andrea
Bartolini, aboard a factory YZM400F, gave Yamaha its first MXGP victory on
a four-stroke… Alan Cathcart track tested the Vee Two Bimota DB2R… We
also tested the Beta 260 Alp and Gas Gas 370 Pampera… Mike Lafferty
won the Lonestar National Enduro in Texas.

Doug Chandler got on the cover of Cycle News 30 years ago for winning the
second round of the AMA Grand National Championship at the Ascot Half Mile;
Chris Carr led much of the race but Chandler ran him down a took the win
on his Freddie Spencer Racing Honda… The AMA/Coors Supercross Series
visited Pontiac, Michigan, for the traditional doubleheader and Jeff Ward and
Ron Lechien split the wins. Points leader and
defending champ Rick Johnson suffered a
hand injury, which ended his chance of winning a
second SX title.
