An action photo from the California Silver Cup Scrambles Series in Castaic,
California, was featured on the cover 50 years ago. Steve Hurd was pictured;
he finished second to Max Switzer in the 500cc Silver Cup class… We tested
the Bultaco Metralla MK II street bike… We had coverage from the Shamrock
Enduro… Approximately 150 people attended the annual Trailblazer Banquet,
who recognized board racer Joe Petrali; Floyd Clymer was re-elected as
president.

big news at the time and a cartoon of President Jimmy Carter preparing to
smash a dirt bike rider was shown on the cover 40 years ago… Bob Hannah
was the big winner at the Dallas Supercross, where rain made it a challenge
just to make it a lap around the muddy track… We took a close-up look at
Bob Hannah's Yamaha YZ250D motocross and asked just how stock is it?...
Bernie Schreiber was second at the World Trials in Germany.

Our special cruiser issue featured our Honda American Classic Edition
(ACE) Tourer test bike on the cover of Cycle News 20 years ago. We
compared the Suzuki Marauder 800 to the Kawasaki Vulcan 800
Classic, and had a feature on the Kawasaki Vulcan 1500 Custom. We
also showed you how to lower your Harley-Davidson… Jeff Emig won the
Houston Supercross… John Kocinski and Aaron Slight traded victories
at the opening round of the FIM World Superbike Championship at Phillip
Island… Tallon Vohland won the opening round of the World Championship
250cc MX Series in Spain.

Stock-class winner at the opening round of the NHRA National Championship in
Gainesville… Dan Smith continued to rule the desert after winning the Saucer
Run Hare & Hound in Teagle Wash, California.
