mer points leader. Smith ended
up winning the Detroit race, the
first of his career. That set up the
final run to the championship,
and Osborne absolutely had
to start making up points in St.
Louis.
Osborne set a blistering pace
on the way to his heat-race
victory at the beginning of the
night, but when the main event
got underway, it was Savatgy

championship hunt).
Smith was actually the one
who, coming from the far outside

Osborne's front wheel in the first
turn, made contact, resulting
in broken spokes in Osborne's
front wheel, which ultimately led
to an 18th-place finish for the for-
