P136 50 Years Ago April 6, 1967 Our annual April Fools issue hit the mailboxes 50 years ago, and we featured an illustration of dirt bikes riding on the moon with the caption explaining that with the rapidly dwindling places to ride in the California desert and all of the land closures, racers were looking elsewhere to race and they evidently found it. Who knows what else in the issue was "fake news," but our coverage of drag racing at Irwindale Raceway and the Jack Ross Hare Scrambles seemed pretty legit. 40 Years Ago March 30, 1977 Jimmy Ellis was pictured on the cover of Cycle News 40 years ago. Ellis and Tony DiStefano split Supercross wins at the Houston Astrodome doubleheader… President Jimmy Carter threatened to ban all off-road riding on public lands… We covered Kenny Roberts' victory at the Charlotte National Road Race… Larry Roeseler was the big winner at the Maywood M.C. Bull Run Hare Scrambles at California City… Jay Tullis and teammate Mike Adams shared the overall win at the Red Garter National Enduro in Georgia. 20 Years Ago March 26, 1997 Jeremy McGrath was featured on the cover 20 years ago for nabbing his first win on a Suzuki. It came eight rounds into the championship at the Metrodome in Minneapolis. Kevin Windham won the 125cc class… We covered the Formula USA Championship at Willow Springs, where Curtis Adams rose to the occasion… Round two of the GNCC Series took place at Road Atlanta and Rodney Smith came away with the victory… We had a Time Remembered feature story on Gary Semics… We also tested the 1998 ATK 600MR flat tracker.
